Elevator7009@lemmy.zipto Games@lemmy.world•Game design question : how to make a "trapped" player character?English1·2 days agoThat sounds really cool. If the princess’ telepathy instructions are strangely like code because that is how telepathy works in your setting, and this is a nice frame story for a programming puzzle game… all sorts of whacko fantasy analogues and justifications for why you are not allowed to use the equivalent of the addition command. (Maybe the princess knows through her rich royalty education that the only reason her addition command could be not going through to the knight because his trip took him at a place full of this kind of magic rock with properties that somehow block the wavelength… so she has to work around that. Worldbuilding yay!)

The princess telepathically communicating with the knight does not have to be the same as if you were playing as the knight. You could have it that way, such that she tells him every time to jump or swing his sword. Or you could limit her telepathy communications to a few per day, so she can only give him general directives and check his progress/environment. You will not have all the information all the time and have to guess the situation off the few snapshots in time you get and hope the orders you give lead him to you. I swear there have to be a few other games with the idea of the player character having to influence others and not being able to directly act themselves, a kind of “person in the control room giving the orders” simulator, that you might be able to look at.

Oh man I thought this was VORON for a bit (I had forgotten the game was called VORON). It is not, but if you are interested in Flock you might like VORON
Most of the main series are shmups, but they have a few fighting games. I had a lot of fun with them! That would be Immaterial and Missing Power, Scarlet Weather Rhapsody, and Touhou Hisoutensoku. There are more recent ones too, which I admit I have not tried: Hopeless Masquerade, Urban Legend in Limbo, and Antinomy of Common Flowers. Cool to have found a PC-98 player!
There are also many fan games out there of different genres! A metroidvania, a puzzle game, long list… https://en.touhouwiki.net/wiki/Fangames
https://www.themanequest.com/ is all about horse games, by an equestrian game dev. You might enjoy it. I am not a horse person but the articles are a fun read.
A lot of !cozygames@lemmy.world and !lifesimulation@lemmy.world games would fit. !otomegames@ani.social are romance visual novels aimed at women interested in men and a lot would fit too.
!infinitynikki@discuss.tchncs.de is an open world dressup game very marketed at women and has that soft pink color scheme, warning for being a F2P gacha game although you can progress without ever spending money. I usually avoid gacha but gameplay is legitimately good and “good gameplay,” “high budget,” and “for women” is a combination this game hits that I do not see too often in video games. (Other commenter is right there is a lot of girly shovelware.) There is combat, but it’s definitely not the main focus. Very soft and pink. You might also like Beglitched (DEFINITELY pink and soft), and Style Savvy for Nintendo DS. I have been meaning to play both of those so I can’t offer perspective on if they fill the romance ask, though Beglitched has combat. You might also enjoy Slime Rancher, also lots of pink and soft. Although it’s also not combat-free it’s not the main point either. Cattails was fun, kind of like Stardew but with cats instead, although as with Stardew combat does exist (though if I recall correctly it’s optional and not the main focus).
Now probably my recommendation least like what you are asking for: I love the Touhou Project series. Don’t let the male-dominated fandom and the tons of sexualized art of the characters fool you, the games don’t sexualize the characters at all—I would feel very comfortable showing them to a 5 year old or Grandma. It is basically a bunch of superpowered women from Japanese mythology/folklore shooting very pretty lasers at each other. The focus is actually combat here, but I figured I’d give it a mention. Not specifically aimed at women but it’s not not aimed at us either. Lovely music too.

Something about it seems just so weirdly self-promotional, instead of “normal” engagement with the community. I never pay attention to usernames but I have noticed this kind of content from the guy on this community several times, and just checked his posts and it’s all YouTube promotion (although I admit the ones mentioning “Dani” might not be his, not 100% sure). No regular engagement with the community as just another gamer. I suspect that’s why the community does not seem to generally like these posts. It is why I certainly don’t. The vibes I get from the posts are way less “hey I am a game dev, I’d love some feedback on my game!” and more “SMASH that subscribe button” but from an English language learner who has not learned the tricks of clickbait titles and the ways people grow those channels, so instead we get these constant posts for their YouTube on Lemmy. Of course, my judgment could be off, I’m certainly not actually clicking the videos to confirm whether my suspicions are right or wrong. For all I know that video has a misleading title and is a tutorial on how to paint a ceiling.
However, it is on topic and I don’t make the rules, and there’s something to be said for unpopular stuff still being allowed. I’d personally want this gone as the self-promotion type of spam but hey, not my community, and I could have judged them wrong.
