  • A xenonaut sits in a bar with a glass of whiskey in one hand and a cigar in another.

A xenobiologist walks in and sits next to them.

“What was it today? Caustic gas? Acidic rain?”

    “A fern.”

The xenobiologist raises an eyebrow surprised by the despair in their tone.

“What’s so bad about a fern?” She asked. “That’s amazing evidence of convergent evolution!”

“Not just any fern. The same fern. Alpha, gamma, delta, epsilon quadrant, all of them have the same genetic blueprint.” He continued putting his cigar out in his drink.

“That’s… amazing! Exciting news even! I mean, celebrate, live a little! You’ve found that the tree of life has roots!” She tried to cheer him up.

The common… domesticated fern, from here.” He says, getting up and departing, gesturing to the ferns growing on the campus green.

  • It’s a fun take, and Lemmy is a bit of an echo chamber, so let me enlighten you all on how that would kind of go:

The MAGA crowd is a combination of idiocy, brain damage, and then dark tetrad people.

They don’t care if their cult leader is hypocritical, they’ll defend everything he says, even if it hurts their own interests; they’ll cherry pick, gaslight, and deny basic facts.

When you see them from a point of clinical detachment, their behavior makes a kind of twisted sense. The mistake is the assumption that they’re just like you, and can be reasoned with or moved using empathy. Their worldview is fundamentally different, and typically only changes via direct experience: “leopards ate my face”. Sometimes not even then.

It’s downright infuriating at times because it reminds me of that antisemitism quote:

Never believe that anti-Semites are completely unaware of the absurdity of their replies. They know that their remarks are frivolous, open to challenge. But they are amusing themselves, for it is their adversary who is obliged to use words responsibly, since he believes in words. The anti-Semites have the right to play. They even like to play with discourse for, by giving ridiculous reasons, they discredit the seriousness of their interlocutors. They delight in acting in bad faith, since they seek not to persuade by sound argument but to intimidate and disconcert. If you press them too closely, they will abruptly fall silent, loftily indicating by some phrase that the time for argument is past.

  • Ditto. Know such a person. They literally only sleep 4 hours a day and assume everyone else does despite massive lifelong evidence of the contrary.

They’ve resorted to working night shifts to avoid going insane from boredom, they sleep from 9AM to around 12-1PM every day, and then STAY AWAKE. IT’S BEEN DECADES.

I’m still wondering if they’ll die a premature death or if this’ll just pan out for them; the one thing I’ve noticed is their attention span got shot as they grew older, so maybe that’s the trade-off
