Meanwhile I paid TurboTax $120 to file my taxes. Lobbyists are absolutely making this more expensive and complicated than it needs to be.

Switch to FreeTaxUSA. The name makes it sound shady as all get out, but it’s legit, easier than TurboTax, and cheaper. Free to file federal and $15 for state. I gave it a try this year and will not be going back

Edit: apologies, I was in a mood and read too fast. Thank you BrikoX
Fuck, even the linked article didn’t name the states:

    • Florida
    • Nevada
    • New Hampshire
    • South Dakota
    • Tennessee
    • Texas
    • Wyoming

And, with exceptions I didn’t read:

    • Arizona
    • California
    • Massachusetts
    • New York
    • Washington

      Yes it did.

Arizona, California, Massachusetts, and New York worked with the IRS to integrate their state taxes into the Direct File pilot, the IRS said in October 2023. The pilot is also available in eight states without an income tax: Florida, New Hampshire, Nevada, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming.

They also linked directly to the IRS site too.

You can check whether you qualify to use the system at directfile.irs.gov.
