WTH are „trail apps“?
Apps that let you view trails for hiking/mountain biking/etc in national and state parks, like AllTrails
Oh nice, and Apple made that native with iOS18?
I think so. You can search and download trail maps now on the native app. Cool feature but I’ll probably still prefer AllTrails
We’ll have to see how comprehensive Apple’s trail maps are. AllTrails has maps for many state and local parks. Gaia has extensive trail information for international hiking trails.
AllTrails and other apps like it put publically accessible trail/hiking maps into app form and have user reviews and trails rated for their difficulty. And they use GPS for trail navigation to help out inexperienced hikers or mitigate poorly maintained trail markers.
They also charge a subscription fee for features like the ability to download a map and use it while not connected to the internet. “Pay us or you’ll get lost in the woods” is profitable, apparently.
Apple might be embedding trail maps into Apple Maps, but this article doesn’t explain that.
They show you hiking trails
I hope Apple’s sources are better than Google’s sources, as there could be dangerous ramifications.
