    Nintendo named it puku-puku which is a common onomatopoeia for bubbling noises in Japan.

    Lots of Japanese names and puns got lost in translation back then.

        My guess is that the translator localizer thought it was akin to a flying fish since they jump out of the water. Cheep cheep makes slight sense with that train of thought. Also follows the onomatopoeia part
