AI has long meant a field of computer science where you get computers to do tasks that require human intelligence, such a a recognising images, playing chess, generating text of images, etc.

AI has been a sub field of computer science for decades and has never meant the same thing as in sci fi.
The AI you’re thinking of in sci fi might be AGI. AI has long meant a field of computer science where you get computers to do tasks that require human intelligence, such a a recognising images, playing chess, generating text of images, etc.
