Not sure if you read the article or watched the video (it is long at 45 minutes) but these two do silly, impractical things on motorcycles, they are kinda like Top Gear but on motor bikes. So you are indeed right it is not something anyone should really do on their bikes, his final paragraph sums it up pretty well.

That said, considering all of the compromises we made in the motorcycling experience, a tent that weighs a couple of pounds and drops easily into a backpack or saddlebag suddenly doesn’t sound so bad.
