honestly i don’t even know what the republican “ideal” is anymore, since it seems to me to be nothing more than “do whatever the 1% wants” for the last 20+ years
Some of the ideals they claimed to follow weren’t necessarily bad. Fiscal conservatism isn’t inherently a bad thing, the problem is that Republicans were highly selective about when they cared about it.
Balanced budget, working away the debt, making sure you don’t run a deficit? All totally sensible. But you do that by making the government more efficient and raising tax revenue, not slashing funding willy nilly
Let’s not confuse conservatives with Trump supporters. “Republican” is an outdated label.
Although I don’t agree with a lot of “conservative” policies, I respect people with conservative views who advocate for those views respectfully and in good faith, where their only crime is to be a bit misguided.
The Trump movement, meanwhile, is just a naked power grab by everyone involved. Absolutely nothing redeeming there.
The non-maga conservatives created this situation. They’ve knowingly voted for bigots and fascists for the last 30+ years. What do you call someone who repeatedly votes for fascists?
Conservatives are completely responsible for maga and for the state of the conservative party. Conservatives did this. A small minority of them may now regret it, but they are still 100% responsible for all of this.
“Conservatives” have a very important choice to make this November. They could’ve ended this insanity a while ago, but keep choosing their old team instead (who barely bother anymore with traditionally conservative legislation).
The T**** cult looks more like the Taliban (religious fundamentalists, extremists… terrorists) with every new revelation we non-weirdos learn (from the likes of Jeffrey Dahmer Vance, Project 2025, etc). I would not doubt a bunch of them have now actually embraced The Handmaid’s Tale. They are more dangerous than ever, and are one election away from achieving their goals, against the will of the majority of the country. It will be devastating.
You don’t deserve the upvotes you’ve got. There is no position that allows freedom from that side. There is no excuse for siding with the domestic terrorist. None. There’s respect for siding with Republicans stepping down to avoid his bullshit, but there should be no sympathy for people who vote for trump or his supporters in any way.
A Republican mayor is different category somehow, at least where I live we tend to alternate and unfailingly it goes like this:
Democratic mayor works on infrastructure, storm drains, water pipes, things you can’t see. Some social programs too, down payment assistance, e-bike vouchers, tree giveaways, funds for low income housing.
Republican mayor courts business, works on the superficial beautification of the city, showy things like stadiums, funnels tax money to companies more than to individuals. Tax breaks for hiring locals, rather than trying to push the money straight back to us.
I kind of think we need a little of that, but not sure why it gets labeled fiscally conservative.
Why is this guy a republican? Is he under duress?

Fiscal conservatism should have never been conflated with severe austerity. Starve the government is a bad plan, thanks so much Grover Norquist 😤
Completely agree.
