Netflix just introduced a new way to experience subtitles that eliminates the need to read audio cues like “door slams” or “phone rings.” Announced on Netflix now has dialogue-only subtitles that only displays spoken words without audio cues and other context.
Great and all that Netflix is doing this, but this isn’t something new in the world. It sounds like their old subtitles were actually Subtitles for the Deaf and Hearing-Impaired (SDH). If you’ve ever seen that acronym and wondered what it meant, now you do.
Subtitles not labeled SDH have traditionally been dialogue-only.
I have been annoyed about this for years. Even foreign-language movies had audio-descriptive subtitles instead of dialog only, and it really frustrated and distracted me.
Glad to see Netflix finally fix it… now that I already stopped using Netflix and never will use it again.
