People are saying because abuse that refs get but I don’t know how true that is, it’s a lot simpler than that. There are hardly any referees, hardly anybody wants to become one and not many are needed. The pool of referees is an incredibly small number. Nearly every person in the UK is white, outside of London and Birmingham, there really aren’t many ethnic minorities in the country. I don’t know how many referees there are in the UK but if you take 100 random people in the UK they are very likely to all be white. Logically 99% of referees will be white and not that crazy for 100%.

The obvious difference is that all PL referees seem to be British whereas the players are from all over the world. Many from Africa.

Unless people of colour are actually disadvantaged in becoming PL referees why would anyone care anyway? I fail to see why more diversity alone would increase the standard of refereeing. Refereeing is a tough job. You dont become a PL referee overnight. If you dont go in there with the relevant experience you’d be eaten alive.

Just to be clear I’m far from biased against non-whites achieving any position in soccer or elsewhere. Tbh I dont give a shit what colour anyone is. But I fail to see how with all things being equal some fake enforced diversity drive would increase the quality of refereeing.

The old boys club just about accept someone not from Manchester/their social circle being considered as diverse, so southerners let alone black and Asian people have very little chance.

Until this current set are rooted out and thrown into the ocean there won’t be any changes.

Fwiw - uriah Rennie mostly stuck to the letter of the law and got stick for being too pedantic from parts of the footballing world over here.

He probably didn’t carry on any further due to not aligning with whatever bullshit Mike Riley and his match fixing friends were up to.

You didn’t need to say you were from America that was fairly obvious. But just for reference, 82% of the UK are white. That figure alone probably has something to do with it. And as for Europe as a whole, something like 90% of people are white. So we can drop this race shit. Very few people want to be referees. They’d much rather prefer to be players of the game.

I was wondering about this the other day when i saw a clip of an old game where Uriah Rennie was the main official. He was the only black referee I ever remember in the premier league tbh.

I’m more concerned about why they are all absolutely useless and why Tierney is still allowed to ref LFC games. He doesn’t even bother to hide his hatred of LFC. Biased is a massive understatement. I’m not sure he made a correct call all half there! Best league in the world, but the worst refs in the world.

It’s poor, to be honest. There used to be a top level black referee, and an Asian too, but there are none now. I suspect it is racist abuse, particularly in the lower levels of the game where they start out, which deters them.
