Most people turned to congratulate Chelsea for the fascinating game, but indeed Manchester City has a few advantages over key decisions. The most apparent controversies were the soft penalty awarded again, and no foul for the handball. Sadly if the standard of refereeing is normal, Chelsea should deserve a win.
That game was officiated well, get over it. There is fair criticism going around for quite a few games this year but this was not one of them.
For the most part, the penalty was inexcusable.
Both players tussled, then Haaland gets by and Cucurella pulls him, Haaland goes down. Sure it’s soft but it is a foul. Had Cucurella not touched him he was in for a contested header with Thiago Silva. Does that foul not get called all the time? Sure. Is it still a foul? Yes.
The problem with VAR is that it takes these medium fouls, could go either way depending on the referee, and it lets un analyze them. This is a medium call, be okay with these sorts of calls, and only complain when major decisions, like the Sheffield penalty vs. Wolves and Liverpool VAR goal.
Haaland is not about to contest Silva for that header whatsoever. And there is a worse foul by Doku seconds before.
