What could possibly be in Arg Square that would justify bombing it? It’s an open air tourist attraction.

Well exactly, there’s not even a plausible pretense. But that should be the story, not the collateral damage to a historical site (although that part is horrifying, too).
They could always claim human shields or regime hiding their but that would be an excuse that nobody believes.
That was the argument in favor of bombing hospitals, and it wasn’t a valid argument then, either.
