I’m convinced they started doing this to sell more strategy guides or get people to call into the pay-per-minute tip lines. And now they keep doing it because it increases online engagement and gives people reasons to write wiki articles.

News@lemmy.world•Wendy's, struggling with beef prices and growing competition, gets a buyout offer
2·7 days agoBrand is already dying anyways. I’m not sure what their place is in the current world; they don’t have the same kid appeal as McD or BK. They used to market the burgers but there’s newer chains with better fast food burgers now. I guess they’re still notable for chili and frosties? I don’t have high hopes for a hedge fund turning things around, but I think they do need to overhaul their image and find something to market that other fast food doesn’t do better.
Maybe I’m a goal anarchist, but I’d argue it’s still a gacha even if you gamble with fake money earned within the game.

Technology@lemmy.world•Getty Images files for bankruptcy amid mounting debt and AI competitionEnglish
20·13 days agoThey had to pay out over $100 million to some hedge fund/VC groups after losing a lawsuit about denying their use of stock warrants. This had been ongoing since 2022 but the final ruling was last quarter.
Also they took on another $100 million or so of debt in anticipation of the Shutterstock merger which fell through.

News@lemmy.world•Getty Images plans bankruptcy filing, to go private
2·19 days agoCombination of debt from the attempted Shutterstock acquisition and litigation from hedge funds/VC related to their initial public stock warrants.
From their 2nd quarter filings:
The Company’s liquidity position has been adversely affected by:
• ongoing Warrant Litigation, with the Company paying $110.9 million in judgment and associated interest in the second quarter of 2026 and carrying a remaining litigation reserve of approximately $99.5 million as of June 30, 2026. See “Note 11 - Legal Proceedings and Contingencies.”;
• significant costs incurred in relation to the recently terminated Merger (which was terminated by the Company on July 7, 2026), with the Company incurring approximately $60.4 million of legal, accounting and other direct costs through June 30, 2026; and
• high interest expense including net interest expense associated with the financing that was obtained in anticipation of the recently terminated Merger, with the Company incurring approximately $30.1 million of interest expense, net of interest earned on the escrowed funds through June 30, 2026, along with $13.5 million in associated financing fees.

News@lemmy.world•California farmers are struggling to sell grapes as demand for wine drops
2·1 month agoIf they’re lucky, growers can sell their uncontracted grapes at a loss to buyers making concentrated syrup.
Part of the problem being ridiculous contracts that prevent the grapes from being sold or given away even if the person who contracted them decides they don’t want the grapes

Not The Onion@lemmy.world•Australian athlete apologizes for racing with diarrhea, forfeits the Beijing competition she wonEnglish
4·2 months agoSucks that the athlete is getting all the blame when the event organizers are the ones who had the most responsibility to prevent this. They should’ve disqualified her as soon as they saw the feces running down her leg. It retrospect it’s easy for her to see that this was gross and inappropriate, but during the heat of the competition the burden should’ve been on someone from Hyrox to pull her aside and tell her she is disqualified because she’s causing a safety hazard for the other competitors.

Technology@lemmy.world•Sony Implements New Customer Harassment Policy Following Backlash Toward Its Plans to Stop Making Physical Game DiscsEnglish
34·2 months agoThis isn’t a war, the customer service people aren’t walking through your home grabbing your games to throw in a fire. Harassing them isn’t going to have any effect on the corporate direction. If you want to get the decisionmakers’ attention, stop buying their products. If you keep sending them money, you’re basically just paying for the privilege of screaming at some minimum wage workers.
I don’t worry about the dates, but sometimes it’s mouldy or smells rotten and I throw it out at that point.
kilopounds (Kips) is a real unit that gets used in structural design in the US. It makes no sense lol.
It is where the hillbillies live after all.

They’re good for extended stays with other people, where you want multiple bedrooms, a kitchen, and a living room. Or if you want a more private stay in a scenic area away from other people.

Technology@lemmy.world•Why Normal People Aren’t Using AI AgentsEnglish
59·3 months agoYeah “AI” stuff gets a lot of hate around here but I think it works pretty well as a tool for things like information gathering and analysis. Wouldn’t trust it to go off taking actions by itself either though.

News@lemmy.world•Colorado declares town abandoned amid water and leadership crisis
5·3 months agoI think this was poorly explained in the article, their other legal mechanism would be to elect a functioning city government. In the absence of this, they can legally declare the city abandoned so that they are administered directly by the county (regional) government.
As long as the city exists, the city is typically responsible for utilities within the city limits. The city government is responsible for requesting aid and coordinating repairs to the water infrastructure. There seem to be some sort of local politics issue where they are unwilling to elect local officials to do this, may be people on the other side who want the city to be declared abandoned. By abandoning the city they can appeal directly to the county government to help repair the water system.

2·3 months agoWord’s interface doesn’t help. Default view gives you almost zero information on section breaks, and even if you turn on formatting marks they behave in an unintuitive manner and there’s some edge cases where Word will still generate a new page after a continuous section break unless you set the font size after the break to 1.

I think there is some rule for US grocery store products they have to label them “Wyngz” instead of “Wings”. Restaurants seem to be allowed to call them whatever they want though.
