Distractor@lemm.eeto Ask@lemm.ee•What's a stupidly expensive adult purchase that you now swear by that you would buy again in a heartbeat?English2·3 days agoI’ve been debating trying this but I’m not an IT expert, so feeling overwhelmed and nervous to even start. Do you have any guides or websites that you could recommend?
Distractor@lemm.eeto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's the scariest experience you've ever had?English4·4 days agoSadly, not true. Most people in South Africa still drive manual cars because they’re cheaper. The drivers aren’t any better. Anyone can learn to drive a manual, it just takes a little longer.
Personally, I suspect that automatic cars are safer because there is less the driver can do wrong in an emergency.

Distractor@lemm.eeto World News@lemmy.world•Camera set up to catch Loch Ness Monster unearthedEnglish71·16 days agoUm, you’re taking my comment way too seriously. I replied to a cartoon picture. I literally just made up a silly explanation that would fit the photos. Please take a deep breath and go touch some grass.
If they honestly thought both parties were equally bad, then they’re getting what they expected - an untrustworthy political party that doesn’t represent their values. I trust they’re feeling sufficiently vindicated.
The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.
Sometimes life has no perfect choices. Not voting was an active choice, a choice not to take action to protect the US from facism. Anyone who didn’t think Trump was bad enough to vote against, doesn’t get to blame others that he won. Their choice comes with responsibility, just like everyone elses choices do.
Voting doesn’t always mean you 100% agree with the party you are voting for. Sometimes it means that you vote for the least bad option to prevent system collapse. I say this as a South African whose only voting goal for years was to prevent the ANC from getting a sufficiently high majority to be able to change the constitution. We came insanely close a few times but made it through.
Not voting in the US election was a choice, a choice not to stand against Trump. So anyone who didn’t think Trump was bad enough to vote against, doesn’t get to blame the GOP for what’s happening.
All that is needed for evil to triumph, is for good men to do nothing.
Distractor@lemm.eeto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Has anybody here actually succeeded in getting an online conservative/right-winger to reflect and legitimately and long term shift their views left?English23·17 days agoPlease could you define what you understand by “high logic”?
Personally, I’m only familiar with “higher-order logic” as defined in maths. So for me, someone with “high logic” has the ability to interconnect and solve complex problems, which is one of the key skills measured by IQ tests.
Realising your beliefs and reality do not align doesn’t require complex logical reasoning, so for me the statement you quoted doesn’t mean high logic.
Distractor@lemm.eeto World News@lemmy.world•Camera set up to catch Loch Ness Monster unearthedEnglish141·16 days agoPersonally I’m betting on Nessie having camouflage skills like an octopus, and instead of squirting ink they can create the equivalent of an underwater dust cloud. That would absolutely explain these photos.
Edit to add: /jk since apparently that wasn’t obvious 🙄
Distractor@lemm.eeto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Has anybody here actually succeeded in getting an online conservative/right-winger to reflect and legitimately and long term shift their views left?English24·17 days agoYour bias is showing. Intelligence isn’t necessary to be left wing. Change is hard for everyone and requires emotional intelligence, not IQ.
Distractor@lemm.eeto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Has anybody here actually succeeded in getting an online conservative/right-winger to reflect and legitimately and long term shift their views left?English4·17 days agoWould you mind sharing more details on your experience?
Like, was it a single person that got you thinking, or feedback from a group?
Is there a particular conversation that you remember as the start of change, or rather a gradual shift over time?
Did/was something happen(ing) in your personal life at the time that made you more open to hearing another opinion?

Distractor@lemm.eeto World News@lemmy.world•Universal Coronavirus Vaccine Breakthrough: A Single Shot That Could Protect You From COVID, MERS, and the Common ColdEnglish21·22 days agoTissue Resident Macrophages hang out in the area of initial infection, waiting for “that guy” to show up again.
This is specifically the bit I’m struggling with. How will they know it’s “that guy”?
It’s a bit like saying “We know this criminal uses disguises. We’ve given everyone copies of his mugshot, which they’ve used for target practice. Now if he wanders in wearing a disguise, people will recognise him.”
As I understand it, “hidden” is a relative thing.
I guess this is the answer?
Going back to my analogy, you’re saying his disguises are pretty simple. So he might wear glasses or a fake beard, but he isn’t likely to turn up in a full clown outfit, with multi-coloured hair, make up, and a big red nose.
Distractor@lemm.eeto World News@lemmy.world•Universal Coronavirus Vaccine Breakthrough: A Single Shot That Could Protect You From COVID, MERS, and the Common ColdEnglish11·22 days agoThis didn’t answer the question for me.
I get the 1st part: They’ve unhidden a stable spike protein hidden by sugars and used it to create an immune response.
The long-term effectiveness is where I’m getting lost. How will the immune system know when to use these particular anti-bodies in the future? If, say, 5 years after being vaccinated I’m infected, surely the relevant spike proteins are hidden by sugars. So how can my body recognise them as the same protein and make more of the correct anti-bodies?
Distractor@lemm.eeto World News@lemmy.world•Denmark defense committee said: we must avoid American weapons if at all possibleEnglish162·23 days agoOh please.
If the USA hadn’t destroyed Iran’s democracy, the houthis wouldn’t have Iranian funding and would be a non-issue, and that’s just touching the tip of the mess the USA caused in the Middle East. There’s a reason the Houthi slogan says “Death to America” and not “Death to Europe”.
How about taking responsibility for cleaning up your own mess? Also, feel free to contribute to the costs of all the refugees the USA created for Europe.
Pannekoek in Afrikaans, pancakes in South African English.
The thick American version we call flapjacks.
The description was clear enough to me 🤷🏻♀so I clicked the link. She has an awesome voice.
