22·1 day agoNice tautology. You can’t justify not voting by of the predictably bad results of not voting.

144·2 days agoYou and anyone else that doesn’t think Oz would have been significantly worse, or thinks it “doesn’t affect them”, is naive or arguing in bad faith. The better option can suck, but both-sidesing the situation to excuse not voting at all serves nobody but the worse option.
To pull from the quote from the OP:
But in any and every contested race, as my mom Mary Morello always said, we have to fight the fascist every which way we can, recognizing that even if there’s but an inch of difference between two candidates, there are a lot of vulnerable people who could be greatly harmed in that inch. So vote your ass off…

123·2 days agoThere is no “folding” in life. There is no walking away. You can abstain from giving specific input, but you are still subject to and share responsibility for the results. What is needed is people that push to have the best possible choice for a given election and will vote for the best choice available. Doing only one is not enough.

Technology@beehaw.org•Shut up and take our money: Amazon plows $1B+ into quashing datacenter dissent
3·3 days agoIt is and it doesn’t. The bit is Fry telling someone to stop selling him on something and giving them money blindly, which isn’t what’s happening in the article at all. Flipped, it’s someone paying another to shut up, which fits perfectly and is something an editor should be able to figure out.

I swear editors aren’t even trying these days.

5·4 days agoThe math is always easy on these things - the millions paid to fight progress is always a fraction of what they expect to lose if it passes, making it simple to know why they oppose these changes instead of the nonsense propaganda they spread.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's the most horribly aged comedy film of the 2000's?
274·6 days agoThe thing is, the movie itself is fine. It is self contained satire that never tries to pass itself off as more than an absurd joke. It’s that everyone is citing it as prophetic or relevant that’s the issue. Ironically, the people that can only process real events through their favorite fiction aren’t nearly as smart as they think they are.
“Hot” take: older people using new slang is good. Great, even. Miles better than them shitting on it for no reason other than thinking young people are stupid.
A bit of a reference to The Colour of Magic, a bit of a silly joke about not knowing how cameras work.

13·8 days agoFella looks pretty smart in that hat, if you ask me.
It’s ok. The demon that lives in my camera has the same problem.
I would argue that the fact that these interpretations can be rendered from the movie alone
It’s not, though. That’s my point. Barring Finn being force sensitive, nothing you mention is obvious or supported by anything except your own expectations.
If VIII had built on any of it, at all, we likely wouldn’t be having this discussion. We would be talking about how VIII took the threads of familiar from the previous movie and actually made it good.
Or if Abrams had the courage to follow through, we would have something that wraps up VII and VIII in something that wasn’t such a cluster fuck. Or maybe it would have all been even worse either way. We won’t ever know. Speculating “If it was better, I would have liked it” isn’t proof of anything.
Any collaborative story teller worth their salt can draw the through lines for some of these characters and tropes. It’s not on Abrams for choosing to leave the story about space wizards open ended on what is the opening note of a familiar trilogy.
We can’t blame Rian for “ignoring” plot hooks that weren’t there. What vague questions were asked, he expanded on. For everything else, people were left to create their own expectations like yours that didn’t line up with what he chose to do. There is no outcome that would have left any number of people satisfied that wasn’t even more of a retread.
This trilogy is a narrative mess and it got that way because of Johnson having no skill as a collaborative story teller and likely little love for Star Wars.
What an incredibly self-centered statement. To question and even deny someone’s care for something just because it’s not the way you want them to is just callous and cruel. Nobody is obligated to care the same way you do, and Rian obviously cares for the franchise and has said as much, even saying he’d come back for more despite the extreme reaction he’s gotten so far. Nobody puts up with shit like that for something they don’t care about deeply and that should be welcomed and encouraged. Accusations like yours won’t keep a fandom or franchise healthy - it just pushes everyone reasonable away and leaves the bitter, angry leftovers that nobody wants to touch.

What are you talking about? Those micro-sleeps are almost better than the main thing. I set my alarm early to be able to roll over and sleep again a few times.
