  • Doesn’t work.

Points 1 and 2… This would result in more wasted time, not less. You’d have basically at least 6 reviews per game, as towards the end why wouldn’t a manager just appeal on the off chance something is spotted. These won’t be quick, first the controller needs to decide what to show, then the ref needs to watch all these replays to come to a decision. before making his way back to the field… 6 times…

Point 3… This will drive people mad. A wrong decision will stand/be given as the ref couldn’t decide within 2 minutes. All people will say is it was obvious, just the ref wasn’t good enough to make his mind up quickly enough. This will add huge pressure on refs to come to quick decisions.

Point 4… the best one and better than the current system. I would still hate this as we shouldn’t be giving offsides for a kneecap being 2 inches offside. Level should mean level within reason.

  • I agree the genie is out the bottle… but we will never make VAR work. Its impossible.

No matter what happens people will want to change it. The current focus seems to be on limiting the time taken to make a decision i.e. if you can’t decide in 1 minute then its not clear and obvious.

But if we made that change then it would be about 2 weeks until a managers out there saying “It was an obvious decision, they should be able to see it in 1 minute, they’re just incompetent”. We’d end up putting more pressure on the refs leading to more incidents like the Liverpool v Spurs goal and we’d end up discussing removing the time cap rule to improve decisions.

We’re forever in a circle now of how we get VAR right, its not just part of football now, it’s the biggest part… and I’m sick of it.

  • Footballs always kind of had the unofficial rule that if you don’t go down you’re almost asking for the advantage. Its rubbish, but its also a slight difference between a dive and going down, there has to be contact for the 2nd.

Now with VAR its significantly worse. You not only need to go down, you then need to scream and shout. The best example of this for me was the Man City penalty v Man United. Rodri gets an arm across the chest, goes down, then screams at the ref like he was just punched in the face. This is the way to guarantee a review on a challenge that is so often just seen as part of football.
