It’s not really stupid. Even Linux versioning doesn’t mean anything. Linux 6.0 isn’t a bigger change than Linux 5.19. It actually feels more like a corporate thing that it is easier for them to have a consistent versioning increase and consistent release schedule. Major changes don’t need to be tied to a major change in number because, how do you decide what a major and minor change is? Do you need to group up changes and make the user wait so it becomes a new major version? Google also experienced fragmentation with Android in the past and likely wanted to avoid it. Because if you tie up specific stuff to specific browser versions, some people would want to keep a specific major browser version causing fragmentation. You can just dictate a specific end date of a feature support rather than a browser number to avoid fragmentation.

  • The “AI translation” feature here has been on Firefox for years now. It was once an extension then just baked in to Firefox. So it was always enabled by default that automatically translates a site if it found a compatible language and it is on-device so doesn’t use the cloud. They just added the “AI” label recently I guess to appease a certain demographic. I guess there are other people who really relate AI to being bad. But guys, these have been ON firefox for a long time, just renamed as an AI feature.

  • Visually, it was a delight to watch in 3D. I’m not good at describing visuals but it’s good, the effort is very visible, it was very well thought out, and I couldn’t ask for more. It’s so good that I hated the montage at the beginning where there were quick camera cuts of different locations matching the beat of the music. I was not able to fully immerse with them because they were only shown for like a split-second. Although, this was just a montage montage showcasing the Philippines. They did make up for it once they entered the “Forgotten Island.” Filipino folklore gave “Forgotten Island” an identity so it doesn’t feel generic and bland. It also allowed the Island to feel massive. Massive enough that it could maybe set up a franchise (?).

For audio, Dolby Atmos is recommended as the sound effects are just as busy as the visual effects. The distance between the dialogue and the SFX is critical especially at the climax as you will feel much closer to Raissa as the SFX does not drown her out. Having watched it twice on 3D with Dolby Atmos and ScreenX (non-Dolby Atmos), the Dolby Atmos version really made me more emotional. It’s not a musical though and the music is likely not going to be at KPOP Demon Hunter level.

People say it’s fast paced. For me, it’s just because so many things are happening and there are so many different plots being merged together as if it’s a cinematic universe in a just one movie. The world they built is massive enough to be able to do this. This leads to a little bit of a weaker ending wherein the resolution is just simply “the power of friendship” and the villain just suddenly becomes good. Maybe they were trying to reduce the runtime? Anyways, I think that part is not much of a letdown. Just like how Miley Cyrus said it in one of her songs “Ain’t about what’s waiting on the other side, it’s the climb.” The journey to the ending will be very satisfying which is what matters for me in a movie.

Comedy parts are fine, although there are some specific scenes that are possibly only relatable to Filipinos. It also secretly has bits of horror which might not be as visible in the trailer (it’s already scary in the trailer itself but it’s overshadowed by the cartoon vibes of the rest of the trailer. And, upon rewatching the trailer after watching the movie, I felt like the trailer lied to me because the line was not what Manang said lol). Although if you are Filipino, you would already know that manananggals are scary creatures that even an adult is creeped out. The children crying at the first part of the film almost feels like a warning that children in the cinema will likely get scared and cry. The manananggal was not just portrayed as a simple monster and a child did cry while I watched.
