I’ve wondered about this too! I came to like Jira at work and at some point I tried setting that up for myself but turned out many of the actually useful features like time tracking were paid features, so I very quickly gave up on it.

1·1 month agoI don’t think it’s likely you would run into problems that couldn’t be fixed, it’s just that the more niche of an operating system you pick, the more time you’ll likely be spending having to figure things out on your own. Often, to fix mistakes, oversights or assumptions made by others. If you love to tinker, that might be fine. If you just want your stuff to be working, it can get frustrating pretty quickly.

5·1 month agoWhere should i buy my domain and are there any things i should be careful about?
As someone else said, check the renewal price, not just the price for initial registration. And obviously try to pick a registrar that you find reasonably trustworthy.
does the end of my domain (idk the specific name but .XYZ) matter at all?
It’s called a top-level domain (TLD). TLDs are handed out by the IANA to various entities. Those entities (eg. a branch of government of a country) can set requirements for registrants and I think they also influence how much domains under that TLD cost. So you might want to pick one with sensible requirements (usually they’re pretty lax but eg. some countries may require citizenship or registering a business with them) that you’re able and willing to meet, is cheap, and that you more or less trust the managing entity of.
I get that i should use a used PC (i have none lying around), but how old?
Depending on your hardware requirements etc. and what you want to achieve by self hosting, I would suggest looking into renting a cheap VPS (edit: embarrassing typo) instead of buying an old computer. It’ll be more expensive in the long term, yes, but you won’t have to worry (as much) about things like getting a static IP address, power usage/outages, noise and possibly heat in the summer, fiddling with router settings, telling everyone your home IP address and sharing bandwidth with your server. A third option would be something like a raspberry pi, if it’s enough for your needs.
Am i willing to self host too much stuff?
The limiting factor, aside from possibly hardware if your services become very popular or are particularly demanding, will likely be your patience in figuring out how to get things working. Email can be a particularly bad one, especially if you need to be able to communicate with mainstream email services. Of course everything also requires occasional maintenance, which again takes time and patience.
Can i use Gentoo, Devuan, or other non-systemd distros as an OS?
Sure, why not? But for a beginner I would recommend picking something with a good amount of documentation and support available to make finding relevant information easier and to (hopefully) be able to rule out the choice of OS as a potential cause when things don’t work.

Privacy@lemmy.ml•do I need to worry about data collection if I block the apps network access?
1·1 month agoI’m pretty sure apps can’t start until the user chooses to launch them, so in that time you could either disable the permission or turn off your device’s internet. Assuming you need a VPN so you can’t just use NetGuard?

Privacy@lemmy.ml•do I need to worry about data collection if I block the apps network access?
4·1 month agoI might be mistaken, but I think on Android you (as an app developer) can’t just launch things in specific other apps, and you can instead only launch a type of action but the user would be prompted to select an app to complete the action with (until the user chooses the default app for that type of action from that app).

World News@lemmy.ml•Russia takes control of US factory on Putin’s order days after Trump signed news sanctions bill
121·1 month agoonly now? With how many russian assets european countries seized around 2022/2023, I assumed Russia would’ve done the same years ago. Was the USA more friendly with Russia than the EU was? Wouldn’t even be surprised if that were the case, seeing as how the EU likes to just shoot itself in the foot in order to lick USA’s boot while the latter just keeps doing business with its literal enemies in war

Memes@lemmy.ml•This has been my self hosting experience over the years
3·2 months agoI tried and eventually succeeded, though it took ages to figure out where the configuration was wrong. It was something relatively stupid too, iirc. But I still don’t actively use it because I don’t have enough faith in its reliability to use for something as important as email, lol
You can buy dedicated trash bags. They’re thinner, so the amount of plastic material per bag is a fraction of that in shopping bags.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Why is the USA the only country that doesn’t use the metric system?
1·2 months agodeleted by creator
None for the time being, and I don’t know what I should use if I were to need one. I already use Proton for email so it wouldn’t be my first choice to give even more data to one company, even if they still seem good (though their marketing is relatively aggressive, which feels offputting).

Open Source@lemmy.ml•Results from the survey about LibreOffice Base - Design Community Blog
5·2 months agoI literally only installed Base in order to be able to print labels on a sheet of stickers. Maybe there’s an easier way to accomplish that but using LibreOffice the simplest working setup I could figure out was using Calc for the data and Writer for setting up the sheet and then for some reason you need Base in order to use the Calc data in Writer.
I’ve done it about once thus far so it’s not a routine process yet, though I did write some notes for myself because otherwise there’s no way I would remember all the necessary steps next time I go to do it. I’ve been thinking of using this setup to replace Microsoft Works for an org that still uses that for this same purpose.

“Just don’t be logged in” is not gonna be enough, if the device is the same as you normally use and you haven’t taken extra steps to make sure the device isn’t identifiable. I’d recommend doing this from a public library computer or similar public device.
