For the last few weeks YouTube has been serving me ads for ladies Gillette razors. My Google profile shows I’m a 41 year old straight male. Most ads are totally not relevant but this one is… out there.

This. Everybody wanted it to be AGI right out of the gate. It’s just a tool, like Photoshop. It will get better over time but it’s not the end all be all.

oppy1984@lemdro.idto Technology@lemmy.world•Roku launches Howdy, a $2.99 ad-free streaming serviceEnglish6·4 days agoWhen I saw the ad for this on my Roku I thought it was just some western channel based on the name and color scheme. It wasn’t until I saw an article about it that I even knew what it was. I looked into it, my thoughts are, terrible branding, terrible marketing, terrible discovery on the website.
I don’t see anything that I don’t already own that I would want to watch, but since the website search sucks I don’t know if there’s more to see or not.
Based on all that, I’m not even willing to blow $2.99 one time to see if it gets better in the app because I doubt it will.
Edited. That’s what I get for trying to type fast while my dog is heading for the door after doing her business.
Seriously, the AI hate gets old fast. Like you said it’s a tool,
geyget over it people.
I switched 10 years ago, started on Ubuntu and hated it, switched to ZorinOS and gained understanding, then switched to Mint and found a home. I now recommend Mint to all windows refugees, it’s layed out similar enough to be intuitive and let’s you learn Linux at a comfortable pace.
Tl;Dr - switch to Linux Mint when leaving windows.

oppy1984@lemdro.idto Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What common thing should not only be banned, but criminalized with mandatory minimum sentences?English10·5 days agoA lot of very important things have already been suggested and I agree with most. I won’t just re-state what others have said, instead I’ll suggest a pet peeve of mine.
People who say “I love that for you”. It’s like nails on a chalkboard to me, it’s always said in such a condescending and disingenuous way by every person I’ve ever heard say it, I just can’t stand hearing it now.

I was a windows only guy most of my computing life, 10 years ago I got sick of it and gave Linux a shot. After trying Ubuntu and hating it I tried ZorinOS and started getting comfortable then switched to Mint.
I’ve been running Mint exclusively for 9 years on all my machines and I love it. It’s close enough to windows to be intuitive while still letting you use and learn Linux.
There’s openings in other parts of the company, though I do have it good otherwise in my current department so I will have to do some research this weekend. The major limiting factor for me is that I’m region locked due to family constraints. As for taking my team with me…there’s only one person I would want to take and he’s basically right where he wants to be, so he’s not leaving.
Well the team is already WFH, but I am hoping that the job turns into a slight promotion and I will mention that during the next meeting with the department head. Also weighing my options with other parts of the company.
Yes but, I just found out that I’m so competent and trustworthy that since management needs to shuffle the supervisors around and the only way to make it work is to leave me in charge of the team for several hours without a supervisor. So now I’m looking at “we’d love to promote you but you’re just to valuable in your current role”. It a damned of you do, damned if you don’t situation.

I first encountered Sceptre during lockdown when I needed better monitors than I was sent home with. I’ve been impressed and have bought two more since then for other devices. And about two years ago I bought one of their dumb TVs, and it’s worked flawlessly.

I can see that, I have a few people now who I know aren’t going to listen, so I tell them the correct way and then sit back and watch them do something completely different.
oppy1984@lemdro.idto linuxmemes@lemmy.world•What's it like being a user hearing about developer drama.English5·8 days agoHey thanks. I had always heard the joke that the majority of tech support was knowing how to phrase Google searches, but thought it was a joke…I get the sense it’s more a funny fact.
Funny enough, I’ve done the poking around bit too, both in person and more commonly now remotely. And yeah nobody has demanded anything… so far, lol. If I’m busy, or just have no clue what they’re talking about, I just say that to them and tell them to call our outsourced help desk. So far everyone just drops their head and accepts my answer then makes the call and spends the next 2 to 3 hours deciding if they really need this job.
Somebody else got the bacteria translation, check the replies.
