I think out of all the things I’ve heard about Elon Musk, this might be the thing that disgusts me the most.

I remember Yudowski being a thing like a decade ago, and people were making fun of his “AI” research even then. It’s scary to realize that not only did some people take him seriously, but those people are at the helm of AI companies and making decisions affecting tens of billions of investment capital. I think there was a quote by Kurt Vonnegut that “true horror is waking up one morning and realizing your high school class is running the country”.

For the other poster lower down, I’d almost successfully forgotten about his Harry Potter fanfiction, people kept praising it so I actually read through a bit of it, it’s painful reading. He also wrote a Superman fanfiction and that’s even worse. I think they both say a lot about his internal mental state and his perception of other people though.

That’s fair. nixOS can be savage. But I think it’s also helpful for a beginner since you can’t break it. A beginner is much more likely to break their system than an expert.

nixOS , because it’s a completely atomic distribution, like a docker container OS style. You define the state of the system in a configuration file, which can even control the kernel, and you can switch to an older configuration file in any reboot. It’s more of a pain than the others, but it works ok out of the box and when you fix something it stays fixed so you’ll never end up in a situation where something breaks and you can’t fix it.

Also, all the packages bring their own versions of their own libraries and directly link to them so they’ll never break during upgrades, but conversely a lot of Linux installers that try to link to system libraries won’t work.

Possibly. It also suggest you’d get all these benefits by just disabling one of the GPUs, because unless battery life is a concern for your gaming laptop the difference in power draw on the desktop will be fairly minor.

Agreed. I’ve been slowly moving the machines onto nixOS, and I’m reformatting an older Mac for a neighbor on nixOS as well. On the livecd it runs impressively fast, but on OSX it’s so slow as to be unusable. Windows is now so actively hostile that it’s time to make the jump.

Excellent point. If stealing is what keeps people fed, then the taxes that keep that store open are worth it. But also I think the reported rates of theft are wildly overstated, here in Australia we had our two largest stores basically admit they made up the whole “epidemic” so they’d have an excuse to raise prices.

I use a physical sim. I’m not sure it even supports eSIM, but I’d be hesitant to ditch the physical sim for precisely the reasons you mentioned. I’ve swapped sims around between phones and even borrowed them from people when I was in a new area, something that’s much harder with eSIMs.
