6 months ago@theorangeninja For lightweight self-hosting (Pi-hole, Vaultwarden, reverse proxy, a few containers), anything with a quad-core and 4+ GB RAM works fine. The HP T620/T630 and Dell Wyse 5070 are popular picks.
The real bottleneck is usually storage I/O, not CPU. An SSD swap makes more difference than a CPU upgrade on most thin clients.
@theorangeninja The AMD Embedded GX-series in older thin clients (like the HP t620 Plus) are still surprisingly capable for lightweight self-hosting. 8-15W idle, passively cooled, and you can usually grab them for $30-50 on eBay.
The real question is always SATA vs USB for storage expansion. Some thin clients have internal SATA headers, which makes them much more practical as always-on servers.
