Well said. It is so frustrating when people don’t understand that people disagreeing with them does not mean their freedom of speech is being violated.
Even the banning example, which is commonly pointed to as violating freedom of speech, is typically (not saying it is always) used when the user is breaking civility rules or rules established by the community which the user assented to by participating in the community discourse.
It is fine to do both. If you have a point to make that hasn’t been made about a subject, you are allowed to make it.
But people should know that commenting on something should add something to the conversation, otherwise you should indeed just use your up votes. Like how supreme court uses concurrences. “I agree, but for different reasons.”

I’m saying Linux has a community that likes to talk about tweaking their systems, trying new things, discussing software, discussing distros, etc; Windows does not have users that do that for various reasons. It’s not shade on Linux at all, but to say that they don’t have a community talking about something as mundane as an OS is probably fine for them. I am glad we have the community and user engagement we have surrounding Linux.
I mean, that’s kind of good for them. Not having a creative community that has content to post about means they are just using the OS. The OS is out of the way. I’m guessing the level of comments that Linux gets are more likely to happen on niche forums like powershell or autohotkey or whatever. I dunno, I love my Linux, but do wish it were a little more normal and boring sometimes.

I’m liking it, but there is a lot of work left to do there. I joined today and replicated the small server I run for video game nights with my friends. That part all worked; channels, roles, voice. but the application layer seems to need the most attention. iOS is not there yet and Android needs notification integration. The desktop client has a memory leak. I hope it gets there, but it will be a tough sell to normie friends who can’t handle rough edges. The self hosted version is also behind on the release so it takes some effort to get working (looking to do this but I don’t know if I have the chops to make it work as is)
The bones are there though and hope they get an influx of help given the writing on the wall about Discords imminent continued enshittification.
So discord users will feel right at home.

Maybe it is just me, but I don’t think I’ve been viewed with suspicion because of simply being nice. If you’re sincere and nice, then this typically doesn’t happen. If you’re known as kind of a dick and you switch to being nice, people will take notice. If you’re being seen as love-bombing, you will be seen as suspect. While I agree men should not be typecast as only sex driven, I’m curious how this part of your argument came into it…

Are we in a better position to prevent government from doing horrible things? I’m honestly at a loss for what meaningful action the populace should be taking. We’ve been protesting. Largest single-day mass protests in country history during this term.
We’ve impeached this president (twice) and each time nothing happened because the elected senate blocked removal.
We do NOT have a strong history of general strikes, we simply don’t know how to do it since it has not been done here.
Our populace is not well positioned to fix this except hope that the midterms happen and aren’t sufficiently fucked that we sweep democrats back into power and put a check back on the system.
Your free speech is not violated when someone disagrees with you. Your free speech is violated when the government stops you from speaking your mind. “Bullying” may be not nice, but it’s not a free speech issue. That’s just two people having a disagreement in an uncivilized manner.
