One thing I love about France is how they number their republics. This is now the fifth one. Some people are talking about abolishing it for a sixth. So, even Constitutional authority is subject to occasional “fuck this shit we can do better”, and the idea of abolishing the Constitution of the Fifth Republic for a better one is nowhere near treasonous but honest democratic-republican politics. Compare that with the American dysfunction of having a document written 200 years ago as a snapshot of an expedient compromise between fops being vested with semi-divine aura.

I think this is wrong. Zionism is a form of ethnic nationalism and it’s not more racist in its essence and its totality than any other ethnic nationalism. It has, like every other ethnic nationalism, racist strands, of course, and those are currently dominant and engaging in genocide and apartheid. But we have to be able to make the distinction. For example: Croatian nationalism is not racism despite what the Ustasha did. Kemalism is not racism despite what the turkish state did to the Anatolian Christians and the Kurds. Ethnic nationalism can turn extremely ugly and dangerous, but it’s not the same thing as racism. The two can be related, but you cannot say the one is the other, that’s just removing meaning and nuance from words.
Nah man, US states are nowhere near as diverse as European countries. They are more diverse than German landers, or UK countries, but nowhere near as diverse as entire countries (eg Belgium vs the Netherlands).

My perspective is the European periphery (Greece) and Canada. I don’t know in particular what the Brazilian parliament is doing. I suspect (feel free to correct me) that within a presidential system, where parliament can be weaponized against a personalist presidency, sure it can become a vehicle for irresponsible brinksmanship, just like in the US. But the moment a parliament becomes itself responsible for governing, when things cannot be blamed on some singular President, when governments can lose the confidence of the parliament and elections can be triggered things change and parliaments have to start taking shit seriously.
That said, Parliamentarianism is not the perfect democratic system, it’s just better than Presidentialism. It is also not a guarantee against fascism (cf Hungary, Italy), it is just harder to subvert them. It is no coincidence that democracies that slide to authoritarianism tend to reform themselves into presidential systems, like Turkey. And of course, the real question is what is even better than both, how do we perfect democracy beyond 19th century political technologies, but that’s a different discussion.
Presidentialism is a dead-end strand of democracy. Progressives living in such systems everywhere should be pushing to reform it to parliamentarianism. No one election should have such cosmic level effects.
