thesystemisdown@lemmy.worldtoMicroblog Memes@lemmy.world•maybe sending dms across the fediverseEnglish81·6 days agoIf you don’t know what you’re doing, hosting an email server will not be a good time. It’s very easy to produce an environment that is easily exploited.
A somewhat inexpensive shared hosting plan allows you to host your own email though. I get it done for <$100/yr. and have little to no limitation over self-hosting.

Redundant, privacy compliant storage is expensive. And then you have to deal with customer people that can’t figure things out, and then there’s the barrage of bots trying to break in. Optical media is dirt cheap and most people know what to do with it.
thesystemisdown@lemmy.worldto Casual Conversation @lemm.ee•Someone from my university took down my websiteEnglish1·21 days agoGotcha. Then maybe it is time for them to have a conversation with the friendly network administrator. You might have lost your logs, but university network appliances usually log alot.
thesystemisdown@lemmy.worldto Casual Conversation @lemm.ee•Someone from my university took down my websiteEnglish1·21 days agoPerhaps it’s something that I’m missing. What do you mean when you say their email is confirmed?
Usually when this happens, it’s a result of someone taking advantage of an application vulnerability, e.g. sql injection. Sometimes it’s more serious, like a script uploaded and a privilege escalation to execute it. The email value written to your database could be anything.
Not to condescend, but this is a good learning experience. If they were able to write to your db, they could likely also read from it, dump the whole thing and harvest the data.
thesystemisdown@lemmy.worldto Casual Conversation @lemm.ee•Someone from my university took down my websiteEnglish2·21 days agoHow can you determine that someone didn’t use their info as subterfuge? It sounds like most people could find that information and use it. You’ll need a little more evidence.
Personally, I’d ask them if they want to pen test my next application and see how they respond.

Kick 'em a few bucks if you can spare it.
Some devs will include a whole library for one thing instead of trying to learn another way to do that thing.
I feel like the Adobe marketing is somewhat pointless. Anyone that has been in the target industries for any amount of time already know the deal.
GIMP is not Photoshop. They are not competitors. It’s a difficult transition. I’m not sure we should even bother drawing a comparison.
I’ve used Photoshop since 1992. I know, I’m old. I started using GIMP about four years ago. I recently got to the point where I can function.
Money and momentum is a motherfucker. Adobe has fuck you money. GIMP has volunteers. Those that don’t like their site should volunteer time or money.
Edit: fwiw I like the GIMP site better too.
There were plenty low quality digital point and shoot cameras though.

I’d recommend looking at credit unions (US/Canada) and higher ed. Both are non-profits and good stepping stones. Either can be a career if you don’t want a ‘stepping stone.’ Depending on how altruistic you want to be, you can find either that serve underserved communities. CUs pay better, but are more corporate and demanding. Higher ed doesn’t pay as well, but is more laid back if you can ignore politics, which there is a ridiculous amount of. I worked at a HBCU (US) for a long time, and it was pretty great. Depending on where you are, it’s usually pretty easy to find an open spot at either.

I wish I could figure out how to boycott AWS. As an aged developer with a little bit of influence, I’ve steered plenty of clients, employers, and peers away, but I still use the internet. There’s no detaching from that.
I always assume that any meat I buy contains harmful bacteria. A quality meat thermometer is a must. I’m more concerned about harmful bacteria on things that aren’t cooked. Cooking to 165 degrees Fahrenheit (74 C) kills salmonella. You might also want to pasteurize your eggs if you’re going to eat them raw.
