I used to whine and ask my mom why she wanted to watch the news. “It isn’t even local! Why does any of this matter?” (We lived in the boonies; none of it was ever going to qualify as local to me.) In college, I subscribed to an international forecasting newsletter for a while, until they finished moving every morsel of information behind a paywall. I’d recently learned about economic globalization and suddenly, local didn’t matter–the important stuff was all in the movements of the national players. Now that I’m old, national and international news is too bleak, so I try to avoid it. A local guy is trying to revive a little community newspaper and it shows up in mailbox for free every week or so. I enjoy reading that. I don’t even go into the All feed of Lemmy unless my Home feed gets too bare and I need to find more communities to subscribe to.
may I know channels you watch that dont always announce bad news?
for me, watching news has become a depressing thing, it removes hope.Unfortunately, one could argue that the channels I watch report bad news 😅
Fwiw, I watch TLDR News from YouTube/Nebula. Their reporting isn’t sensationalist nor do they show harrowing and grim images. They just report events. But they do report topics like wars and conflicts so i don’t know what you make of it.
Say you’re not an American without saying you’re not an American
Are you talking about news not making me feel depressed? Now that I think about it, I only tend to watch particular news channels from YouTube or Nebula, and they tend to be less sensationalist. I have not watched TV news in years.
Doesn’t like all countries have bad news all the time? Like its always “crime is rising”, “economy about to crash”, “iLlEgAl iMmIgRaNts”.
Your work must be bad if you find the news comforting.
Primetime cartoons… mine were just on a DVD disk that I play on repeat… 👀 It was like one of the I guess final “artifacts” I had from my previous country before my family left… I forgot how TV even worked in China…
I can’t remember much English-language cartoons… like I didn’t feel so emotionally invested and be like oh I really want to watch this and I’m gonna keep annoying parents to switch the channel. What do y’all even watch?
I feel like I’m missing that part of my childhood to relate to most Americans (and those in other English-language countries)
