It’s hard and expensive. The us-mexico border has the same problem and US spends like crazy to find tunnels. If the tunnel is bellow 5-10 meters I think it’s almost imposible [1]

In Gaza from what I heard they also only use hand tools to avoid making a lot of noise.

The article indicated this tunnel was entirely inside Gaza and was likely used by militants for storage, staging, etc. Israel focuses on locating tunnels that cross the border, not ones that are nearly half a kilometer behind it.

It’s starting to become obvious that Israel intentionally ignored the warning signs, wanting Hamas to go ham, and thereby justify a genocide in retaliation.

Hanlon’s Razor: “Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity”

Israel is clearly having intelligence failures, their troops are less than stellarly trained, which they were always pretty highly touted, now their military looks like amateur hour when compared to any leading NATO nations troops, there’s no excuse for all of the specifically journalist casualties, never-the-less all of the civilian casualties, pure amateur hour bullshit.

This is what happens when corrupt fascist conservative morons gain power, they believe their own hype, because they’re usually pretty narcissistic, they have next to no empathy or compassion save when it benefits them, and they ruin the institutions and structures they come to be in charge of and they let these structures and organizations fall to ruin because they’re too caught up in their nationalism to admit that they need to improve and adapt, while also being too corrupt to properly fund.

You could argue Hanlons razor or you could believe that there has been a dehumanization campaign going on in Israel for many years. Palestinians are looked on as less than human (how many times have we heard terms like barbarians and monsters being used), pests that need to be eradicated.

The IDF is one of the best funded and trained militaries in the world. I have a hard time believing that they are as incompetent as people are playing them up to be.

Incompetence can be willful though. When you tell your military to shoot at everything they see without identifying targets (which is basically Israeli doctrine), it’s leadership Incompetence turned into doctrine.

This wouldn’t fly at this scale in any other developed military.

what “dehumanization campaign”? what “looked on as less than human”? i have no clue what ur talking about, and if a few people are of that opinion, i can argue that a few people in USA are literal neo-nazis yet i dont say USA is the epitome of nazism.

I would love to attribute the actions of IDF to stupidity (or both at least) but then I’d be ignoring the decades of evil they did.

This is the best summary I could come up with:

That day, militants used a rocket-propelled grenade to break past the portion of wall close to the Erez crossing and stormed the base, killing at least three soldiers and kidnapping some back to Gaza, the army said.

It was one of several places along the border wall where militants easily blew past Israel’s security defenses, entered Israeli territory and killed around 1,200 people and took about 240 others hostage.

The unprecedented attack triggered a devastating war that has raged for more than 10 weeks and claimed more than 18,000 lives in the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip, according to Palestinian health officials.

He added that the entrance, a circular cement opening leading to a cavernous passageway, was located under a garage, hiding it from Israeli drones and satellite images.

While the military was aware that Hamas had an extensive tunnel network, Dinar said they didn’t think the militants would be able to carry out their plans for a large-scale attack.

The Erez crossing, a fortress-like facility that processed the movement of Palestinians into Israel for work, medical care and transit to neighboring Jordan, held great symbolic value for Hamas.
