There were more than 2.4 million encounters at the U.S.-Mexico border during the 2023 fiscal year, up from roughly 1.7 million in 2021, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection data.

That’s a shitload, above and beyond “normal”, of real humans and families we have to deal with. They are not political footballs. Pretending there is no issue because the GOP is campaigning on it is ignorant and borderline evil. Real people are hurting, both inside and outside the US.

I don’t have answers, but I see the problem. And if anyone wants to present a simple answer to me, I’ll call you simple.

That’s less immigration than during Bush Jr.'s term, simply with better enforcement. The country didn’t fall apart then, it’s not falling apart now. And since you post this link and argument every time the border comes up, I’ll just cut and past the link that shows this isn’t a record level of immigration. It should be familiar, as you’ve seen it before.

The annual total — which includes people who were stopped at the border more than once — jumped by 37% from 1.7 million the year before.

That isn’t to suggest 2022 saw the largest number of people trying to enter the U.S. illegally. For instance, the Department of Homeland Security estimates that there were nearly 4 million unauthorized border crossings in 2000 but only 1.6 million were counted. Over the years, immigration authorities have been able to track more migrants as a result of improved security technology.

There was a bipartisan bill in the senate they worked on for months, it included funding for Ukraine etc because Republicans said it had to be tied to border security

Right before going for any votes, the trumplicans said they would vote no on it because it had funding for Ukraine etc

Republicans don’t want to fix the problem, because then they can’t complain about it
