KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Ukrainian forces have secured “combat control” of areas where Russian troops entered the northeastern Kharkiv region earlier this month, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.

Meanwhile, two people were killed Saturday in an aerial attack on the city of Kharkiv, which is the region’s capital, according to local officials.

Kharkiv is about 20 kilometers (12 miles) from the Russian border. Moscow’s troops have in recent weeks captured villages in the area as part of a broad push, and analysts say they may be trying to get within artillery range of the city. Ukrainian authorities have evacuated more than 11,000 people from the region since the start of the offensive on May 10.

“Our soldiers have now managed to take combat control of the border area where the Russian occupiers entered,” Zelenskyy said in his nightly video address on Friday evening.

Zelenskyy’s comments appeared to be at odds with those made by Russian officials.

Honest question here, any website that’s accurately tracking the current reality in Ukraine? Within reason of course, it’s an unstable situation by definition. I see a lot of headlines that make it sound like Russia is winning, and then some articles claiming Ukraine is kicking ass hahaha. So I honestly have no idea what’s going on because of the flood of propaganda.

Just in case, I really really have no horse in this race. I’m from latin america, so this only affects me via globalization. But I would love to be able to track the situation there just for morbid curiosity.

Accurate? No. You’re not going to get accuracy. Not right now. Between the lack of enough impartial journalists in the field, propaganda from both sides and just the fog of war, you’re not going to get it.

I’ve been using deepstatemap.live which has proven accurate and reasonably up to date in the past. When things are moving fast though it may fall behind.

There’s a bit of uncertainty principle at work. The more accurate the data, the less up to date it’s gonna be.

Ukraine is absolutely not winning, but propaganda and deception is really important in war. It’s important for Ukraine to have the world think they have a chance otherwise people are less likely to assist in a lost cause.

        Ukraine is winning

If you saw a bar fight, one dude was 6’2", 225 and everyone thought he was a monster but he’s being battered around by someone half his size you wouldn’t say the big guy is winning and certainly wouldn’t say the little guy is losing.

Russia takes more losses than Ukraine. Russia just has more fuel to burn.

No mappers seem to confirm this… There are reports of Ukrainian counteroffensives in the area, but nothing that goes so far as to indicate that Ukraine has taken back control of all of Russia’s territorial gains there. If anything, it’s starting to look like another stalemate along a new frontline.

Is Zelensky talking out of his ass? Are mappers receiving delayed data? Who knows…

I think it’s where Zed said its “combat control,” meaning that they can call on fire missions on the whole area, not that they reoccupied the land

I mean… No shit? ATACMS has a range of 300km, and it’s not like Russia’s pushed the front line 300km.

This is the best summary I could come up with:

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Ukrainian forces have secured “combat control” of areas where Russian troops entered the northeastern Kharkiv region earlier this month, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.

“Our soldiers have now managed to take combat control of the border area where the Russian occupiers entered,” Zelenskyy said in his nightly video address on Friday evening.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has said the Kremlin’s army is attempting to create a “buffer zone” in the Kharkiv region to prevent Ukrainian cross-border attacks.

In addition to the ground offensive operation along Ukraine’s northeastern border, Russia is continuing to bombard the Kharkiv region with missiles, guided aerial bombs and drones.

Oleh Syniehubov said that two people were killed and 33 others wounded when an aerial bomb hit a large construction supplies store in the city of Kharkiv on Saturday afternoon, causing a huge fire to break out.

Zelenskyy called the airstrike on the store “a manifestation of Russian madness” and appealed to Western countries to provide Ukraine with air defense systems.

The original article contains 563 words, the summary contains 167 words. Saved 70%. I’m a bot and I’m open source!

Uh… this is not even the most hated on thing I’ve said this week. And it’s Sunday for me.

I just assumed a bunch of bots were dunking on me for making fun of Russia losing territory it had just captured.

If this is really one of the dumbest things you’ve seen on Lemmy this year, consider yourself lucky.

Your comment read to me as a sarcastic tone making fun of Ukraine for celebrating recapturing the territory.

And it goes without saying that the opposing force of the conflict would not need to be informed of the happenings… So, there you have at least a small fraction of the reasoning

The (loosely translated) quote is from Sun Tzu’s Art of War. That’s the whole point - of course the opposing force doesn’t care what territory you have declared secure. It infers that the only way to “inform” the enemy is to defend it with your life.

Yeah, Sun Tzu was indeed sarcastic.

Regardless how you feel about the quote or me, at least you used your words. That’s better than most.

I’ll have to rescind my nomination for dumbest. Unfortunately there is no substitute award, because now that I have a better understanding I think you will have much, much further to go to earn “most pretentious” :P
