All of 'em huh? One single media entity is mentioned in that quote. However:
Name a Black-owned news agency that applied on time then. That would convince me. There are hardly any Black-owned news agencies out there
I only have the same article you do. I’m just not the one assuming The Atlanta Black Star is the only black-owned media outlet, or that every black owned media outlet was late.
Context would lead me to think there must be at least ten, or this demand would make little sense. But that’s a lower boundary.
And also, I would imagine that they aren’t doing this bit of not-enough just for The Atlanta Black Star alone:
There very well could be a legitimate thing going on here, but until CNN says “every black owned media outlet turned in their application late” I’m not going to assume that based off a sample size of one.
Even then, you’re implying 1% of news outlets are Black-owned. Sadly, that sounds high to me. Most news outlets in the USA are owned by corporations
This article explains it better. First of all there are plenty of black owned media companies, more than one in Atlanta who were denied credentials:
However, they were apparently all denied based on the Jun 7 deadline.
CNN implies the deadline was stated in their announcement of the debate on May 15th but the only deadline mentioned is for polls determining which candidates could participate.
President Biden and CBC and Rep. Meeks lobbied CNN for Black media inclusion after the denial.
Ah so it’s like a “special test” for access. Right.
I don’t know how these things usually work as there was no indication in any of the articles how the successfully media handled it. It seems crazy there would be such a knowledge gap.
Feels pretty obvious that seating would be limited and coveted, and there was contact information in the announcement for “more details”. If I had no idea how to get an invite, I’d have written that email May 15th. But maybe there’s more to the story than either side wants to tell.
Did any of these 800 media agencies apply after June 7th?
Beats me, but I’m not ready to assume literally every black owned media company was late unless CNN explicitly says that, which was NOT explicitly said in the article. The article cites one that was late.
