Nebraska native here, it’s not great! Ingrained racism mixed with multiple generations of families hardly ever even seeing a black person. There’s no “why” for these prejudices, I’d bet money these kids wouldn’t be able to explain their actions beyond “because it’s funny”.

More integration is the long answer, but we’ll never get there as long as people with power (like these teachers and district employees) protect and tacitly encourage racism through inaction.

Some outsiders getting involved in local politics would make also make big waves, but that’s a big ask.

White pastor (anyone can call themselves this btw) and nurse couple adopts black kids, willingly moves to a 6000 person Nebraskan sundown town from California.

Imagine being that uncaring about your willingly adopted kids.

I think people assume because it’s “the middle of nowhere” it’s gonna be some wholesome and idyllic small town experience.

I met this lovely trans woman who moved here from California. Her and her partner got all the way through closing on their house before they realized it’s not the most tolerant area. They sold the house and moved to Utah, I think they’re still settling in over there.

Hopefully the mormons are better folk than the bible belt christians.
