Never understood why people were hating on people that fled their newly formed country for better opportunities, but Jefferson got a lot of the country eating pasta well before Italy even existed, so it’s probably a toss up. Heck lasagna may not have existed yet, because Italians thought that tomatoes were poisonous when they were imported, but I dunno when that happened.
By ~1700 tomatoes had begun to be used in Italian cuisine, while many of the tomato dishes we associate with Italy (pasta sauce, pizza, ragu) got popular around the 1830s. So President Garfield could have conceivably had lasagna!

I recall reading that the late 17th century was when they realized they were safe to eat
