The developer works full time for the app, even when it was a Reddit client. If you guys can’t view an ad every once in a while to support something you use daily, then delete your Lemmy account. Nobody eats for free.
Have you actually tried Sync? It has significantly better UX than the alternatives currently, and the feature list is unparalleled (I’ve really missed being able to filter out specific users or communities from my feeds).
I agree. That’s why I pay for apps and services that are well designed and supported. The “free” mentality always leads to advertisements being pushed into everyone’s face.
Without financial support, most Lemmy instances wouldn’t exist. I’d rather support apps that have free versions with premium subscriptions, or donation models, but it’s all the same thing to me. I want to go back to world where we just pay for stuff.
Not just pay for stuff, but actually own the stuff we pay for. All those albums and movies and video games that people pay hundreds of times their value by using a subscription service, can be revoked without warning or appeal. Having a CD or BluRaycollection isn’t just about “showing off”, it means you can listen to that music or watch that movie/show any time without the need of a connection or at the whim of some corporate overlord.
Yes. I want my old version of an app that will never stop working when someone decides it should. Im ok with paying to upgrade, Im not ok with apps that needlessly need an internet connection and that stop working when someone shuts down their license server.
Ok, so? As I said, Im ok with paying for an upgrade. I am not ok with an app not working offline when the only online functionality of it is license checking. I am not ok with an app not working not because the service it connects to changed their API, but because the developer of the app itself said so.
Do you want to keep up with the conversation or keep being an ad? They said they want to go back to just paying for things and I expounded on that to include going back to when we actually owned the things we paid for. Or do you like wasting money with literally nothing to show for it and no control over the things you pay for? Keep sucking that billionaire dick, though. Maybe someday they’ll shoot a wad (of money) down your throat.
They were providing a means by which you can have ad-free access with one payment to Sync’s dev. Thus, you pretty much own unobstructed access to said service with no further charge.
That’s unfortunately as good as it gets in today’s world, unless you want to keep using CDs and DVDs like it’s 2004. Your call.

…or just pay 19 dollars to support the dev and get rid of the ads

For more features and customizable UI probably.

Understandable. Voyager and Thunder are pretty good.

Having used them all, Sync is already well worth the 20$ to remove the ads imo
The sheer level of customizability and polish isn’t even comparable.

Voyager is awesome! Very pleasing indeed. Was using it until today.
It does have its issues though. I’m already noticing Sync is much more responsive and faster. Part of that is probably due to Voyager being a PWA.
I actually find Sync to be just as pleasing to use as I did Apollo when I used ios. I dig the slightly more compact yet lightweight feel it has.
The Sync developer doesn’t work on it fulltime. He worked on it for maybe a few months, then at least a year of hardly any update.
I really wonder if you’re a long time Sync user.
LJ absolutely works on it full time, he doesn’t have any other job, and I’ve been using Sync for about 6 years at this point
Imagine defending advertisements.
Sorry, but I’m not a fucking product. I don’t care who’s pushing them.

Any app that relies on another service needs maintenance just to keep up with changes in the API that break backwards compatibility.

You can buy a ads-free version of sync without subscription for about 15 euros.
Don’t bother keeping up with the conversation, just keep being an ad. Whore.
Lol what a sad human being.

Then pay for the software?
