Has to be North London Derby for me, as I am a Gunner, but Arsenal vs Man Utd comes really close. Lately our games with Man City is something that I cannot wait for as well. Which ones would be your favourites?
City Liverpool is always good football, and a scuffle or 2 happen
They’re not derby’s but Man Utd-Newcastle and Arsenal-Liverpool. Man Utd-Newcastle was heartbreak for me but it was so exciting to watch.
Chelsea spurs and arsenal spurs. Spurs just bring the heat tbh.
Gotta be Charlton Athletic V Luton Town. Not so big nowadays, but in the early 90s it’s all you’d see on The Big 3 ie. MoTD, Sky Sport, 4-4-2 magazine. Gonna be a rager whenever it does happen.
Haaland vs Man Utd
It’s not even just based on last week, I honestly enjoy Chelsea vs Tottenham these days. The Battle of the Bridge in 2016 changed everything with that fixture.
Spurs arsenal or Spurs Chelsea. Both are always crazy fixtures
I won’t include my own rivalry because ofc it would be biased
Arsenal vs United for me
I like Everton/Liverpool because its been respectful after the sympathy for Hillsbourgh
I enjoy Liverpool / Newcastle because it’s historically been a goal fest.
I honestly don’t enjoy Tottenham/ Arsenal as it seems petty, unnecessarily nasty and over the top
I miss the Arsenal / ManU games from the 90s and 00s
I like Everton Liverpool, seems so genuine and intense (“hang the kopites one by one” but also the respect and shared sympathy for Hillsborough and both suffered successive governments and thatchers desire to decommission the city.
Arsenal-spurs, Liverpool-man utd, Chelsea-spurs are top 3
Any rivalry/derby but Man City vs Liverpool. Swear never seen such friendly rivalry ever even when both teams were at peak. Pep and Klopp kissing and both fanbase after every game go “awww you played better, awww no you played better. Awwww that’s so sweet. Good luck on your next game.”
Eh these are still the best games the whole szn
Arsenal v Spurs. It usually has everything a neutral fan would want.
And over the last 20 years absolutely nothing of significance on the line, just pure bragging rights
This is the most plastic comment I’ve ever read.
3-0 May 2022 basically decided who qualified for CL
You’re either a glory hunter, or someone with shit memory since man city were battling relegation in the last 20 years.
First game was against arsenal in December 1991, second game was in February 1992 against spurs, saw first hand the club relegated from the premier League (twice) and the first division, saw city at old Wembley in 99, had a season card for 20 years. So get fucked dickhead.
Soooo no game meant anything back than following your logic.
“I watched my club get relegated, twice! Get fucked!” Give that a read and consider thinking before replying you knobhead
So your snobby point about how Arsenal and Tottenham games are about nothing because neither team are winning the league etc etc kinda seems a bit dumb now considering that you’ve been through relegation scraps? Or are you still an insecure little boy?
what zero club history does to a mf
How do you define history then?
Ah yes. The age old question that no big-6 fan dare answer😹
I’m fairly sure two years ago, the NLD was one of the final pieces for securing us Champions League football.
That’s mostly what derbies are about, welcome to football.
That lad’s comment is the epitome of modern CITEH fans.
But they’re such sexeh litl behbehs
city fan discovers derbies (2023, colourised)
Agree. Also Chelsea vs spurs at the bridge, is becoming a good watch as well. Especially now with attack minded managers.
Fair point, lots of goals, hard tackles and spurs usually losing
if it can be played at 4pm it’s not a real derby
more animosity in brighton v palace
In not a brit, please explain me why its not a real derby if it can be played at 4pm?
Derbys are usually played only at 3pm?
Midday
If it can be played at 4pm the police don’t care enough because there’s no threat of fighting or anger
Midday gives people less time to drink
I’m being downvoted by ‘big’ team fans who think a real derby involves it mattering for CL spots and not hating each other
Arsenal and Spurs barely even dislike each other
thanks, that makes all sense. I will keep a look at games that pay at 12:30 from now on.
Arsenal v Spurs is the only local rivalry where both teams have been mostly evenly matched for the past decade or so. The other big local rivalries in England are actually pretty one-sided now. Liverpool v Everton is always a win for Liverpool. Man Utd v Man City is skewed to Man City. West Ham have been too inconsistent for the past decade to be considered a major rival of any of the London teams. Chelsea v Spurs and Chelsea v Arsenal are big games but from what I’ve seen, people aren’t really bothered about Chelsea because they are mostly seen as an artificially propped up team (rightly or wrongly).
I think the biggest games of the calendar are still Man Utd v Liverpool and Arsenal v Man Utd. Those games still have a lot of needle in them irrespective of form and league position.
As a west ham fan yes we are inconsistent overall but if we look at the past all games starting from 19/20 season for west ham v Chelsea, spurs, and arsenal:
West Ham v Chelsea:
West ham 4 wins, Chelsea 4 wins 1 draw
West Ham v arsenal:
West Ham 1 win, arsenal 6 wins 2 draws
West Ham v Spurs:
West ham
West ham 2 wins, Spurs 4 wins 2 draws
Yes we (West ham) don’t have an overall winning record agasint any of these teams but I think it shows we cannot be ignored for these London derbies. They are usually pretty close matches with very few 3-0 sort of wins.
There will always be tension when we play these three teams. Never use to with arsenal was more friendly but since the whole rice saga it’s become a bit more spicy.
Who would you guys generally say it’s ranked in order of hatred? Millwall, then?
Yes Millwall traditionally but its weird. If we were to play them tomorrow yes there would be alot of hype about the game, the history, the violence etc. And there probably would be some violence.
Men who in their youth got up to no good and want one more scrap. Or now there are some younger “hooligans” who would want to start something because they’ve heard about the history etc etc.
But normal fans, fans who go to the game for the sport, and fans like me 1000s of miles away who get up at 4:30am to watch them I don’t think we’d be THAT bothered. We don’t really have that recent history or recent knowledge about the weight of the rivalry. Yes it would be cool to see that match and we’d know about the bad blood but that’s about it.
Where as with Chelsea and spurs because we play each other, at minimum, twice a year there is alot of recent history, story lines, great wins, close losses etc that all add to the importance of the game and the desire to win. Plus we interact with those fan bases more whether in person or via social media that adds that layer of competition.
TLDR: Millwall historically our biggest rival but if you asked many west ham fans my age (28) or younger if they’d rather beat millwall in a cup competition or spurs/Chelsea I think most would pick spurs/Chelsea bc millwall are kinda irrelevant to us in the past 20 years.
Well said ⚒️⚒️⚒️
Thanks. As a Brentford fan I was fearing you’d call Brentford v Fulham close but of course it’s pretty one sided with Fulham getting battered everywhere they go.
For me, it’s (in order) NLD, Spurs\Chelsea and then Spurs\West Ham. I honestly can’t get worked up about other clubs derbys, none of them seem to have the same venom. Apart from South Wales derby, there’s two teams who really hate each other.
