The mental gymnastics these fucks do to hold one side accountable for things they wouldn’t on their own side is some Biles level tumbling and flipping.

I couldn’t imagine being this devoid of values.

      They’re on a mission from God. It’s faith-based.

Once it’s no longer evidence-based and all actions are moral because God is on your side… there is no evil you won’t do, while feeling righteous the whole while.

I think there’s a good mix of both sides of that coin - plenty that a genuinely crazy and believe as you’ve stated, but another plenty that are just amoral and/or evil who just used the “mission from God” bullshit as a cover.

          amoral and/or evil

Yes there exist bona fide diagnosable sociopathies and psychopathologies that can lead to “amorality”. But they’re pretty rare.

Much much more common is the insular thinking of an in-group in an information bubble. Especially, again, when that group values faith above reason

And if we were just talking about the general population at large, I would 100% agree, but I think the “bona fide diagnosable sociopathies and psychopathologies” are significantly overrepresented in people who obtain positions of power - especially the ones that end up in the news for stuff like this.
