Also let’s not forget, the US hasn’t won a single war since WW2 (and even that was due to them staying out of the conflict for like 2/3 of it, supplying both sides, then providing bare minimum support on the western theatre and proclaiming themselves winners after the Red Army took Berlin). At least not in the traditional sense of the word.
But since the US cannot be a loser they’ve redefined winning as “couldn’t actually achieve victory, pouted and stomped it’s feet, then withdrew and proclaimed itself a winner”.
I always find it amusing when baby boomers quote the expression “… strong men create good times, good times create weak men…” as if the children of ww2 weren’t the most coddled generation in history.
I know it’s not directly related to your comment but I always think about how impotent the US has proven to be the last 80 years
I’m pretty sure that’s exactly the point of the quote. The Greatest Generation were strong men, who were created by hard times (the Depression and WWII), and who created good times (the extraordinary economic prosperity of the postwar 40s and 50s in America). Those good times created weak men (the hippie boomers), who created hard times (everything since the 50s).
I mean, it’s bullshit cryptofascist propaganda, but the boomers who quote it don’t think of themselves personally as the weak men who created hard times - they think it’s the rest of those boomers, the worthless hippies with their civil rights and their feminism, that ruined America.
Okay but that is just plain wrong. While it was an international coalition and not just the US, the 1st Gulf War was a victory.
You can contest that the invasion of Afghanistan and the 2nd Gulf War were victories. both ended up in conterpartisant operation for years.
Also even if we talk about USA only operation. The invasion of Panama was a success, removing Noriega and installing a pro US regime. And so was the invasion of Granada.
You can contest that the invasion of Afghanistan and the 2nd Gulf War were victories.
