  • I don’t pay for streaming services any more unless there is a reason to have a subscription beyond watching TV/film. For example, I have a Paramount+ subscription for ~8 months of the year to watch the A-League, and occasionally I’ll have a Prime subscription for business reasons. So if something is on one of those services, I might watch it through there. I tend to pirate new releases and big budget shows that benefit from a high quality 4K encode, rather than pay to watch ads.

In Australia we have a public broadcaster called SBS, which is the unofficial multicultural broadcaster. Its streaming service has a very high quality and varied catalogue, with TV and film from all around the world, but it is ad-supported and usually in low bitrate 720p. I used to overlook it for those reasons, but these days I find myself going to it more and more. I guess it’s a mix of being busier, being increasingly turned off by the generic US slop that paid streaming services churn out (only to cancel halfway through) and wanting to support a public broadcaster which is putting effort into maintaining a high quality catalogue despite a severe lack of government funding. Recently, it acquired an exclusive world premiere license for the new sci-fi thriller ‘Smilla’s Sense of Snow’, for example.

The way that was going, I thought they were going to announce the end of the project. Glad to see it’s just a temporary pause on updates!

The best Android alternative from a privacy standpoint forr the Fairphone 4 is iodéOS, which is a privacy-focused fork of LineageOS that fully supports the device (including re-locking of the bootloader). LineageOS isn’t really a privacy-focused project, but it would also come with some improvements over stock. You can also get a version of LineageOS with microG here.

  • I tried watching ‘For All Mankind’ with my partner but we gave up after a couple of episodes. I wasn’t really sure what to expect going in, but all the relationship and 1960s social drama stuff is quite dull and it feels like a show that will take an absolute eternity to “get good”, if it actually does. With four seasons already out, we decided to cut our losses before we waste more time with it.

I have also been watching a low budget Canadian mystery series called ‘Something Undone’, which is about a true crime podcast duo investigating a cold case in a small town. I’m only a few episodes in, but I really like the cinematography and small town feel of the show. There’s not a lot of dialogue, and quite a bit is communicated visually instead. It reminds me of the many small town mystery audiodrama podcasts out there with writing that is as clichéd as the rest of them yet somehow still entertaining. It has that “cosy watch in bed” kind of vibe and the episodes aren’t too long either. It’s also fun because it has quite a few actors I’ve seen in other Canadian productions, such as ‘The Expanse’ and ‘Kim’s Convenience’, but who never had this much screen time in those shows. One of the leads, Michael Musi, played a very silly role in the latter of those shows so it’s interesting to see him play a much more serious role here.

  • The first season was definitely better than the second, but overall I think it’s very good. One of House of the Dragon’s particular strengths compared to Game of Thrones is that it is focused predominately on two families and a small number of key people within those families. Game of Thrones derailed over time as it added more and more characters and had less and less time available to resolve its many overarching storylines. I think it’s much more likely that House of the Dragon will have a satisfying conclusion (not least because it is an adaptation of an already completed story). If I were to make one criticism, the big plot twists are much easier to spot in advance and that can sometimes make them feel a little forced. I know that this is a show set in the universe of Game of Thrones and I know that it will be trying to deliver the same big moments a) because the original author is the same but also b) because the producers are trying to recreate a success of that scale. Knowing how insane Game of Thrones got, I just feel super alert to all the tricks and foreshadowing and can feel stuff winding up in House of the Dragon way earlier than I could in its predecessor. Still a great show though, one of the very best currently airing.
