In light of what’s just happened to Everton FFP is once again a hot topic, and I just wanted to highlight some clear facts a lot of people are missing that show how the people who run football are hypocritical and are an absolute joke when it comes to running their own rules

FFP was first established in 2009 for the sole purpose to prevent professional football clubs spending more than they earn in the pursuit of success, and in doing so not getting into financial problems which might threaten their long-term survival. - this was implemented after the events that happened to Leeds where we almost lost them as a club. This purpose quickly changed, forgetting about the small clubs being abused and focused towards small clubs becoming successful by closing the financial gap between them and the big super teams. We’ve already seen from the creation of the super league that the big teams feel that they are threatened and want maintain their status at all cost, this is why the rules were adapted post 2012

You might say that a team like Man City shouldn’t be able increase their ability to spend because of their owners. But with the creation of the premier league and it’s large injection of money for the big teams, it’s seem that they made it impossible to get to the same level as them without money

Then their is the simple fact that man city have never spent more than the likes of Man Utd, Real Madrid and Barcelona. They’ve simply closed the gap. People hate them for their success, but it’s not cause of money, their owners could take over man utd tomorrow without injecting money and turn them back into world beaters. They are the kind of owners everyone wants, smart owners who aren’t greedy, who don’t take money out

I understand that the rules are the rules, but maybe the rules are wrong and designed to keep the big clubs fat and to prevent to competition. If we can’t take the money away from the big clubs then how else do we challenge them besides the way man city have done?

The only purpose of FFP is to protect the big old club like United, Arsenal and Liverpool. If they want to level the playing field they should use salary cap/budget cap. Leicester won the league than their stat players were brought by the big club and relegated. So with FFP club like United can squander 100m+ on transfer ever season and even if they were not in top4 every season they can still afford to do so because they have great commercial revenue. Other smaller clubs even they slowly develop themselves to be successful but one wrong window/poor season can break them and they can hardly get up again. Sorry for my poor English as it is not my first language. Expected thousands of downvotes from fans of those big old clubs because they deserved to be successful forever and other late comers should not be allowed to catch up with them. And any breach if financial regulations deserved demotion to National League. Funny fans always use Juventus as examples and they seems doesn’t know that Juventus was demoted for buying referees, which I think is much more severe than breaking FFP but of coz spending more on players is way worse than buying referee in their minds. If average reddit users have a chance to become a referee I think they would permanently ban a player for pulling the shirt to stop a play. Funny the number of United fans begging for Saudi takeover while asking City demotion and discredit their success because of ‘dirty money’

When you comply with the rules 100% but still ffp gets you, ffp is broken.

“Everton have cooperated with the Premier League — virtually to the point of prostrating themselves — in the past two years. Informing them of intentions to buy a player, outlining their rationale, asking if the league are comfortable with that, in what has been a transparent demonstration of their attempt to comply with profit and sustainability rules (PSR).”

I might get downvoted but as an everton fan we spent stupid amounts before covid. This is due to a stadium issue. But bc we worked with the PL for years to get signings approved, had a nonce who we couldnt resell, and had an owner with his assets frozen, we have now been sent to our third relegation battle. When a comfortable finish looked possible it will be another stressful season on the cards. Im not arguing that efc did nothing wrong. Anyone who does should take their blue glasses off. Our ownership is shady and we deserved the punishment. Even though it clearly says its not a sporting sanction and so it should just not be a deduction, many of us would probably take 3-6 points.

10 is egregious when “no sporting advantage” was determined. Thats why we are angry. We deserve punishment. But after working with the PL for years this is absurd.

That’s BS. The PL said it wasn’t their responsibility to ensure Everton kept within the rules and reminded them of their obligations. They continued to spend and spent too much. They didn’t act within the rules.

Look at the link, the commission is the PL who just want a show trial to claim no need for independent regulation. The facts are for all to see. Third lowest spend. Its a farce.

City “are the kind of owners everyone wants, smart owners who aren’t greedy, who don’t take money out”, I am not sure this is true, and of course they don’t take money out.

“People hate them for their success, but it’s not cause of money” - No doubt their success is the cause for a lot of people’s negative attitude towards them, but their success is absolutely due to their money and near unrestricted spending.

I’m not sure rival fan’s hypocrisy makes sporting integrity issues correct though. By all means call them out for it, but cheating (if proven) shouldn’t just be accepted, regardless of the club involved.

    You’re missing the point.

FFP is designed to stop small clubs buying trophies before becoming a big club.

If you’re rich and want to win trophies either buy a big club, or buy a small one and make it big by growing it as a business over decades (Brighton, Brentford etc).

“maybe the rules are wrong and designed to keep the big clubs fat and to prevent to competition.

This was the main goal and purpose of FFP from day 1. The big historical club hegemony were threatened by the ease with which a newcomer like Abramovic could join their ranks. Look at Newcastle’s slow building process in comparison. They also have unlimited funds, but can’t follow the same model of Chelsea or Manchester City.

If Newcastle’s owners weren’t state backed, but were just random billionaires operating exactly as they are now, no one would care what they’re doing, because they’re not doing everything in their power to circumvent the rules everyone else is following. Everyone’s issue with Newcastle is the potential political bollocks that comes with them, but that’s a separate issue entirely.

People take issue with Chelsea and City because they’ve come in, and quite obviously done everything they can to circumvent rules and plough unsustainable funds in to the clubs. This in turn has created genuine, inflated revenue streams for them and created a massive illegitimate advantage. A club spending its own earned money isn’t an issue whereas clubs being propped up solely by ownership investment definitely is.

I’ve never bought the argument that the historical advantage the mega-clubs have over smaller clubs is more “legitimate” than the advantages new money has brought to clubs like Chelsea and City. Of course they’d like everyone to accept this empty myth, but football has always been about haves and have-nots as long as I’ve been alive. The fact that a small club could overnight have unlimited resources to compete on the open market terrifies executives at clubs like Real Madrid, Bayern, Arsenal and United as it should, which is why we have things like FFP and an inevitable SuperLeague. Their historical closed-circle hegemony is not so safe in this new world as they may have to face actual open market competition for players and trophies. References to a club “spending its own money” as opposed to the money its owners invest is a bullshit smokescreen used by the mega clubs to justify their understandable concern that simply being big and well-known may not always be enough to produce results and maintain their status.

Football has always been about money and who spends the most. Just not at the level it is now.

Look up how Arsenal turned into a big club in the 1920s and 30s. They were the OG “Bank of England” club

The biggest issue for me is that there are 20 teams in the league who are forced to play by different financial rules. It just seems so wrongs that a team like Man United can outspend Burnley legally each and every season by £10s of million.

Formula One introduced a budget cap which handicapped the biggest teams and gave the smallest ones a realistic chance of reaching the cap limit. So in theory, this creates a level playing field. Teams can still invest in their infrastructure and facilities so bigger teams still can potentially buy a bit of advantage but nothing like before.

The Premier League has gone the other way and made it based on revenues, so the big teams’ advantages is forever built into the system.

I’m not saying a budget cap is the solution, but FFP isn’t either.

Agree that with city NOW it’s not all about money they spend amazingly well I mean I never knew who Doku was and he’s amazing thought he was an old sith guy , but without money they would be in the championship , the first 10 years they spent like money was going out of fashion

You said - ‘FFP was first established in 2009 for the sole purpose to prevent professional football clubs spending more than they earn in the pursuit of success, and in doing so not getting into financial problems which might threaten their long-term survival’

That is exactly what Everton have been doing. They have been spending huge money on washed up players for a decade now, and not getting the results to back that up. It was rather clear, over the last 2 seasons, that they simply don’t have the money to spend anymore.

Their spending apparently resulted in a loss of £124m in one year alone. If a club is overspending and losing 124m per year, they are going to end up crippling themselves long term.

It was clear to everyone, that Everton’s spending model was not a sustainable one. They messed up, and now they pay the price for that.

If Everton actually placed in Europa spots a couple of times after spending hundreds of millions, maybe they would not be in the trouble they now find themselves in.

Yea what Evertons owners were doing was pure abuse of the club.

I don’t agree with the point deduction though, because if they get relegated, which is highly likely now, will cause major issues for the club financially and many experts are saying it’s likely we’ll lose Everton as a club

I agree. I think we should see Luton and Wigan Athletic and other tiny irrelevant clubs get bought out by billionaires and have them just win the league every year. What should matter most in football is who your owner is, not your history, tradition or any of that shite.

FFP is to specifically prevent leeds united. Which is an owner overspending by taking loans gambling on qualifying to europe. Not to prevent a rich owner that actually wants to spend from spending.
