This is what diplomacy is. Public statement from an ally while you make private deals to enforce them.
It’s the same reason carrier groups are now over there and why Biden was talking about revoking Visa’s, the most direct consequences any president has threatened israel with in decades, for any Israel settlers that attacked Palestinians in the West bank.
Hes using soft power like the bully pulpit, military presence and immigration rights for israel citizens as the public stick. The private carrot is what will move things.
This is how you do this.
Oh nooo, they won’t be able to visit the US. Such a thing will surely stop a dude from killing his neighbor so they can steal their land. Oh, and the carriers are 100% there to stop Israel, lmao.
Many Israeli’s have family in the US, so it does cause a problem. The larger picture is that’s also a signal that the US will start freezing out its diplomatic relationship if Israel continues its actions. Its the first time a president has removed the “blank check” status Israel has enjoyed for decades. Thats a big deal, no matter the “small” gesture.
The carriers are carrier’s. They inherently demonstrate power. They are there to project it on Hamas on its face, but it’s still the 7th largest airforce, all by itself, deployed on your border. Friend or foe, it’s a statement.
You can play at it not meaning anything, but again it’s soft power. You demonstrate your strength without using it to send a message. That is one of them.
That soft power you are mentioning isn’t worth shit if the “stick” to killing so many people, over so many years and during this war, is “we’ll ban you from comming to the US if you go and murder a guy and take over his land”. It’s an empty gesture that does nothing. Would that airforce ever be used if Israel went for a full genocide? Would it be used if they displaced everyone from Gaza city, southward? Because so far, the Israelis have resorted to telling people to “go south”, bombarded the everliving shit out of most neighborhoods in the city.
Soft power means nothing to people who don’t give a shit about it. See North Korea with the tree incident. It’s there to buy time and hope it blows over for the US. Right now all eyes are on Gaza. They won’t be in a few months - see Ukraine and how many people stopped giving a shit after that time. Meanwhile in both places, people are dying, and proportionally not much is being done about it.
