Complaining about “woke”, when woke just means you’re aware of the oppression inherent in the system, is such a tell. It tells me you’re a dumb hateful piece of shit and your opinion is invalid.

Using the term woke as a pejorative is beyond stupid. As you said they are thick as bricks.

Not that long ago, it was used to mean something good. It was probably around early covid when it started twisting into a pejorative. Before that, it meant being awake to the realities of the world, aware of the violence inherent in the system.

        personal aside:

I heard it a lot in the psychedelic community. People would talk about “waking up.” At first I thought that meant there was some spiritual dimension that I could emerge into with the dissolution of my physical form. After more experience with powerful psychedelics I realized that the hidden “spiritual reality” was really the same material world, only with the knowledge of the interconnectedness of all beings. People of all backgrounds, livestock and wild animals, plants, fungi, ecosystems, waterways, soils, and the atmosphere itself. All of it is interconnected and dependent on each other, and deserves to be treated with kindness, compassion, and respect. So many of the problems of the world are due to our failures to do those things. It’s hard to have such a revelation without becoming a leftist, but for many people that takes a lot of deconditioning and deprogramming from the subconscious patterns ingrained in them since childhood.

Maybe just sneak some LSD into the water and see how long people stay “anti-woke”

I’m torn. Because people that use the word tend to be assholes. I dont think I’ve ever heard anyone use it but right-wing types. Usually talking heads, influencers and by extention their extremely committed audience.

So I tend to get immediately defensive when I hear it.

But also, if we dont talk to each other and find common ground we will never be able to work towards our common goals.

Class solidarity is more important to get our common wants met.

But the types that say ‘woke’ are definitely in the cult to some degree.

I can’t think of a single word on the left that has the same weight. Not because there aren’t extremes but because usually the extremes are more varried and divided.

It was originally black slang for socially conscious, but in more recent years was turned into a pejorative term by right-wing media and thus its consumers.

Right winger standard operation consists of stealing things from others, pretending those things are theirs, destroying those things through ineptitude, and then getting mad at everyone else for the things they stole getting destroyed.

Language, symbols, movements, entire countries and economies, etc…

We need to stop letting the right-wing appropriate and corrupt our lingo. We make it so easy for them. Every time they latch onto a word, as soon as they do, that word becomes taboo or at least faux pas among leftists/progressives. Even when it was previously used by them…

Like the whole “OK” symbol thing. It was completely innocuous until some twerps on 4chan started making shit up about it actually meaning “WP,” and we gave it to them that easily. There was virtually no pushback. No one saying “No, it means okay.” Anyone who tried got accused of dogwhistling. Suddenly you can’t make the “OK” sign without being called a white supremacist anymore.

That’s just an example, but it happens so often. That’s why I tend to roll my eyes whenever I find out a new word is apparently a dogwhistle. There are so many of them that seem so innocuous on the surface, you can’t convince me everyone using them is doing so maliciously. A lot of people probably just haven’t heard that it has a distorted meaning now.

And I’m always afraid that anything I say might actually be some secret fascist codeword, or at least that people think it is. Because the truth is, I don’t know their secret code, if they even have one. Why would I?

That and they tend to take our words and innoculate their base against them. I cant even count the times I’ve started speaking to someone I disagree with on some level but as soon as I use the proper language to explain it they shut down or get pissy.

            Its like they’re sleeper agents.

I have to speak to them like a child just to get to the point of “hey, I’m not your enemy because we disagree. The media is made to make us fight.”

Right wing media doesn’t just tell them what to be upset about, it tells them exactly what you would say when you try to tell them the truth.

We will never have common ground with them. Goals, maybe if they didn’t vote against their own self interests leave them in the past, vote in leftist and progressives. The world will get better without them

I made my early career in the union. We were always told vote with our wallet. I would get so pissed when some dude from the right-to-work state would come to our local job market to make $30 an hour and then bitch about the dems.

Like dude, I get it, but at least they’re pretending to care. Your red state fucked your career so bad that you had to drive here to make a living wage.

I cant even imagine how fucked the trades are now. Republicans did a good job at taking the builders of this country and turning them into simps and boot lickers.

This line of thought (Superman is “woke” now) wouldn’t be a fucking thing if Byrne and Miller had been told “no”

This is why these mouthbreathers think Kal being kind is wrong.

What’s the context here? I did a quick search and only found that Byrne did a re-write of Superman’s origins in 1986 Man of Steel comic.

It’s good not to underestimate how effective propaganda can be on those enmeshed in different algorithmic circles. Instead of ‘evil’ I would say ‘blind’. But it’s a fair point.

So the person who wrote this thinks there are “woke” things? I wonder what those are. Anyone with more than two brain cells and normal empathy knows that there’s no such thing as “woke”, it’s a dumb and hateful term and should never be used other than in reference to those who use it.

The term woke is actually over a hundred years old, and originally meant awareness of racism. Over time, it expanded to awareness of gender inequality, LGBTQIA+ rights, etc.

      Source: Wikipedia

      Stay woke.

Plenty of liberals act like civil rights and gay marriage meant racism/homophobia was over and don’t like to acknowledge the ways the system still oppresses us.

Plenty of Allies act like because they aren’t a bigot personally, they’ve done their part fighting bigotry.
