What are the odds that something could impersonate them in a way that gets their account banned? And if that really did happen, why on earth would they not be able to talk about it?

Off topic is off topic. Removing a post for violating rules isn’t mean, it’s maintaining the integrity of the communities people come here for.
It’s a tell for delusional thinking/paranoia.

The best way to attract new users is to have not just a quantity of content but a curated feed of quality content. Part of that means ensuring users’ posts end up in the correct community. If you just allow people to post whatever they want, wherever they want, that’s going to drive users away.
PieFed allows mods to move posts from one community to another.
Actually I think hexbear might too, as it runs a custom-modified fork of Lemmy.
Mods have enough to deal with. If getting a single post removed turns someone away from the platform because they couldn’t be arsed to read the rules or search again for the right community, that’s probably a net benefit for the entire Lemmy community.
Your account is five days old. So I don’t think your message here carries a lot of weight unfortunately. That post is violating the community rules as well. And the account defended itself to not be a bot when no one accused it of that. So it’s probably not a great case to use to start a warm welcome campaign.
Former redditors should be familiar with something like forum rules and how to check them.
yeah i basically fucked up and sent a direct link to my old account to a couple people that i know irl. after considering that this is not good, i had to make an alt.

Yeah, I never know if people write genuine, stereotypical posts like that. Or if that’s bot activity. Being adamant not to be a bot is kinda what bots do.

How do you want to make the Threadiverse self-explanatory in terms of culture?
I mean, it’s one thing to add a “Find new communities” button that’s hardcoded to lemmyverse.net to every last Threadiverse frontend.
But it’s another thing for every Threadiverse frontend to automatically, whenever lemmy.ml or Lemmygrad shows up somewhere, open a pop-up that reads, “This server is owned and operated by the Lemmy developers, one of whom is a die-hard Stalinist, the other one of whom is a die-hard Maoist, both of whom are staunchly defensive of mass-murders and genocides committed by communists,” and keep popping it up until you click, “I’ve understood this.”
Or, whenever a post or a comment came from Mastodon, a pop-up that reads, “This post/this comment essentially came into Reddit from Twitter. Wholly different technology, wholly different culture. This is normal in the Fediverse. Deal with it.”
This is a much better idea than not removing posts.

Why is this a problem? Right now lemmy is small enough to mostly not draw attention from bots. It’s also small enough that blocking people can actually shape the type of comments you see.
It’s not a problem if you’re into

- Linux and other IT topics
- Star Trek
- German Memes
As soon as you try to talk anybody else, you might find you struggle to have a community large enough to sustain a conversation

Should fediverse stay a niche “project” for idealists? Or should it become an actual alternative?
I would really like for it to become a proper reddit alternative, but that is not happening. Less because of the platform and more because of the people.

NGL the more hostile Lemmy users kinda keep you from exploring more obscure communities. They’ll just dog pile you for having somewhat controversial opinion and if you explain yourself they play the victim.
PieFed has a feature that lets admins move posts. If My instance federated lemmy.ml, I’d undelete that post right now and move it to a better community for the topic, like maybe !soulism@multiverse.soulism.net or !storytime@multiverse.soulism.net, and greet the user there. I think moving the post is the right solution here.
They came from Reddit, communities having their own rules which you’re supposed to read before posting isn’t an alien concept to them. I believe it’s justified to expect that much from them.
Also, that post was restored pretty much right after it got removed.
What other reasons can be given for post deletion? Lemmy isn’t worse off due to that post no longer being here.
The graph is surprising, I expected the opposite, due to reddit becoming more and more reddity every day, along with the current political/social climate in multiple countries. It seems a good time for people to want something different.
That’s counterbalanced by the fact Lemmy is acquiring more and more of a reputation as a tankie bar.
When I made an instance, I decided not to advertise it as a particular platform. It’s MULTIVERSE, it’s a social media app, that’s pretty much what you need to know.

If lemmy is getting a “reputation as a tankie bar” and that is keeping the type of people away who repeatedly regurgitate tankie, leftist etc, that will lower the quantity of users, but the quality ratio will improve.
All My friends are anarchists who hate tankies and avoid Lemmy because of the tankies.
The first part is very unlikely to be true, the second part is probably not a bad thing for lemmy, your “anarchist” friends are most likely much more at home on twitter, facebook, instagram etc.
Honestly, I use Reddit more now that I’m also on the threadiverse. There’s active local content and more Reddits and posts tied to the genres of books I read. Yes, I should be the change I want to see, but there’s only so much of that I can do.
The “active local content” even here in australia , is often trash on reddit, it still has that murican feel to it. No doubt that varies by location, and subject though. My reddit feed most days is completely empty, it’s more for if I want to look something up, or ask a question about something (guaranteed mixed results there of course, but probably no worse than any other platform).
Good thing you found this forum for complaints.
i’m not complaining about mods or sth, just as a general viewpoint of how to treat new useres.
