He’s not wrong.
Fck me winning Europa leagues 3 in a row clearly means fck all judging by these comments… Who knew it was so easy…
It’s not particularly hard
It’s also not hard to qualify for it but you lot can’t even fucking do that lol
Those Europa League wins are a long time ago now. 2016 was the last win. In between, he has had a disastrous spell at PSG and a pretty mediocre time at Arsenal. So obviously he has his doubters. He is killing it at Villa though.
A disastrous spell at PSG? He won more there than Tommy Tuchel, who some people revere as a bona-fide football genius!
“Disastrous spell at PSG” lol
To be fair that also means crashing out the group stages whilst seeded reasonably highly twice in a row right
Educate yourself, the format change where EL winner qualifies for CL happened after Sevilla’s second win. And the change where EL winner got Pot 1 happened way later.
They crashed out of CL only in their 3rd win, and that was in group with Man City, Juventus and Gladbach. They were in Pot 3.
That’s not being fair at all
Fair - will always root for him.
WORD!!!
Unai’s better Than Arteta? What’s your Next Joke Carra ??
I could feel this coming for Aston Villa for a while, I thought Gerrard would have been the guy if I’m honest but he completely failed. As soon as they announced Emery it just felt right tho, and they’ve been great to watch under him so far. They’ve got great players all over the pitch and they’re playing really good football.
Of course he is.
It‘s not only an argument. The guy is a serial european cup winner and now is challenging with his villa side for the top 5 in in his first year. Guardiola, Klopp and especially Arteta needed at least a year to get going
Respect
emery is class
Emery is a phenomenal manager and all these discussions below about what Pep would have done with Aston Villa or where Emery would have been with City are completely pointless since they are based on “What ifs” and nothing more.
Before Haaland came to the PL people here were discussing how he won’t adapt fast enough to the tough Premier League and that he didn’t fit Citys playstyle at all etc. well he arrived and scored the most goals ever in a Premier League season and won nearly everything there is with City
Emery is a phenomenal manager and all these discussions below about what Pep would have done with Aston Villa or where Emery would have been with City are completely pointless since they are based on “What ifs” and nothing more.
Okay, what would have Emery done at Arsenal?
With the team he had then or the team Arteta has now?
Ha! You think that would matter? Look at what Emery did with Torreira. He tried to take a really good deep-lying midfielder with 4 goals in 77 appearances and make him a goal scoring threat. When it didn’t work, he ghosted him. He had Aubameyang, Ozil, Lacazette, Leno, Cech. Hardly an EFL Championship team.
That’s 2 keepers, both Arsenal have since deemed not good enough and 3 players who I’ve seen far more criticisms than praise in their last seasons from Arsenal fans
Only arsenal fans would agree with this. Alone this summer:
Handling of ramsdale and raya : highly questionable Not buying a striker of proven pedigree: very questionable. Not buying another centre half: when a lack of decent back ups in this position in particular cost you the league title: madness. Before I’m corrected on timber being bought, yes, he’s a some time centre half but you need 4 decent options to challenge in reality and arsenal only really had 2 before.
Last year the whole squads lack of depth exposed them as the season wore on and really he only really replaced those allowed to move on for the most part and then £40m on a goalie when that was the least needed part of the puzzle. Just really quite odd.
Couple that with the klopp levels of not being able to accept blame for a bad result? Well I think you’ll struggle to find non arsenal fans with sympathy
What’s that got to do with Emery?
I dont buy into the over the top pep circlejerk man. Hes not doing anything Rinus Michels or Cruyff didnt do before him in terms of football philosophy
Pep made Rinus Michels or Cruyff’s work better and more suitable for the modern game, which is more tactical, physical and faster.
Nobody did.
I don’t think he cares. Trophies matter. Besides many coaches copy him like currently with inverted fullbacks and no one can doubt that he has a knack of improving most players.
99% of people knew Haaland was going to score tons of goals the moment City signed him. That also has nothing to do with Emery.
Emery only performs if he’s at a club with villa in the name, he’d therefore be shit at City
He is class, isn’t emery the one that first introduced playing out from the back for Arsenal? Those were nervy days, but was also trying to in-still a new style of play, I remember Ramsay had a stellar season.
Aston Villa are gonna backdoor the title a-la Leicester 2016 and I’m all for it
Unfortunately will never happen again as long as city exist with their current squad and pep
Their current squad where they’re missing de Bruyne, no more Gundogan or Mahrez, Stones also injured, Haaland patchier than he used to be? City are at the time of the year where they’re looking vulnerable again, and they’ve actually been dropping the points. Meanwhile they have at least four challengers, compared to last season which was just a two horse race.
We all say this, then it gets to next year and city go on a massive winning streak
I’m ready 😅
Up the villa
Inject this in my veins.
If you forget about Unai at Arsenal and the easy comparison to Arteta, maybe he has a point. But as usual I think he’s just saying shit for headlines. Carragher is an idiot.
Is he better than De Zerbi? Pochetino? Ange? I don’t know.
How’s it for headlines? It’s literally spot on, De Zerbi and Ange have potential but they’ve won anything and Poch has never won anything besides the French league, while also being a massive bottlejob otherwise.
Yes he’s literally better than all three of the managers you’ve just mentioned
De Zerbi hasn’t won a PL game since September lol
Compare trophy cabinets of them.
Emery has won multiple European trophies hasn’t he?
Postecoglou also has a pretty full cabinet. Not his fault that its harder for people from the other side of the world to break into European football, the fact he has done it at all is a massive achievement.
Angelos needs to overtake David Moyes first never mind Emery.
Forget Ange, what has Poch won, what has he done in his career to make a case for him even being better than beheaddie Howe?
Emery’s record at Arsenal is a lot better than people make out.
The two years before he was appointed they finished 5th then 6th. In Emerys only full season he came 5th and got to the Europa league final. It’s well documented he wanted Zaha but the club decided to blow £80m of his budget on Pepe.
Arteta came in and finished 8th and scored less league goals than any Arsenal team in over 10yrs.
Arteta got given time which on paper Emery probably deserved more.
It’s all about who was in charge (ownership) at the time. KSE weren’t full owners under Emery until 2018, the budget was never going to be there, once they took over and Josh stepped up in an executive role and changes were made. When they sacked Emery we were 8th after having drawn 3 and lost 2 to lesser clubs, we were clearly going backwards. The Pepe deal certainly hurt Emery because seemingly the only person who wanted Pepe was Raul Sanllehi. The FA Cup is what gave Arteta the time he needed to completely rebuild the squad, and I think the lockdown might have also helped in distracting people from football and giving a further grace period. Timing is everything as they say.
That 4-1 beating in the final against Chelsea did a lot of damage.
What has Ange done that Unai hasn’t?
Ange has won 21 titles as a manager.
Ange has qualified for and managed at a world cup and won an Asian cup.
He delivered national silverware for the first time to Australia, with a dross side while under immense nationwide media scrutiny.
People diminish his Celtic accomplishments and fail to highlight the mess at Celtic when Ange first came in. Celtic lost/sold 18 first team players, lost the long term CEO, Hired a new one before he also randomly left 2 months later. Lost the whole recruitment and scouting team and just finished the previous COVID season 25 points behind Rangers. Ange also got hired after the start of pre-season, rocked up by himself with no backroom team and went on to win a double against a strong rangers team that got to the Europa league final. He played some of the best football seen in the last 30 years of Celtic Park. People don’t remember how shit Lennon was in 2020/21. Ange had to rebuild Celtic against a Rangers team that finished unbeaten and 25 points clear.
Ange has managed relegation sides into title winners within basically a season more than once for fun. And in salary capped leagues.
His Jleague Yoko Marinos dominated possession against Pep’s city when they played… it’s absurd.
Ange is a very good manager with a horrible record in Europe. You can’t blame that on having managed Celtic. Celtic are famously good in Europe. A much, much worse Rangers teams went to the Europa League finals, but Ange was exposed at that level repeatedly.
Ange is an excellent manager, but he’s not proved himself at the top level yet. He has a good track record but hasn’t done anything in Europe or England yet so no, we can’t adjudge him to be same level as Emery or anybody who has won anything in England or Europe.
Time will tell, but currently it’s not unreasonable to exclude him from the discussion.
Won the league in multiple countries / continents? Won a domestic treble? Won an international trophy? 3 premier league manager of the month awards in a row.
Emery has of course won the Europa league 4 times. But Ange has achieved plenty that Unai hasn’t.
Nothing that are of the equivalent that Emery has won. There’s loads of B level league managers with big trophy cabinets, great and they’ve done well for their level but they aren’t of the same value.
He says ‘mate’ a lot. Doesn’t quite work coming from someone with a Spanish accent.
Needs a better catchphrase. Mate is a bit boring.
Good Ebening
They both played very high lines when they didn’t need to
Also everyone knew Villa were a good team being pulled down by Steven Gerrard but Carragher isn’t going to criticise his mate.
Gerard made good players bad. Emery makes good players great.
Must be how he won the SPL.
And why he was snapped up by the mighty Al-Ettifaq to manage in the greatest league on earth, check and mate Gerrard doubters.
Better than poch and ange is pretty clear right ?
De Zerbi
yes
Pochettino
arguably yes
Ange
yes
You can make an argument for most things. Doesn’t make them correct.
I could argue that Gary Neville is an unbiased man of unmatched quality and an al round great guy. Sure, I’d be wrong. But half the fun of arguing is chatting absolute bollocks and trying to defend it.
How any one takes what Neville has to say tactically after his tenure in management blows my mind.
It’s difficult to say that. You obviously have two at the top, which is Klopp and Pep.
After them, in the second tier, you would have the likes of Howe, Emery, Arteta, Poch, RDZ. It’s difficult to say any of these are categorically better than the others.
Emery has had the most success out of all of them, three europa leagues in a row with Seville, a Europa league with Villarreal and the taking them to the champions league semi final knocking out juventude and Bayern before being knocked out by liverpool.
You can’t put Howe, RdZ on a similar level to Emery. Even Arteta & Potch is a stretch.
Emery as won 4 Europa leagues, runner up too and got to the CL semifinals with a non ‘big 3’ Spanish team. That alone puts him above the others.
He did as well as anyone at PSG. (Record points in the league wasn’t it?)
Let alone the last year at Villa.
Poch is not the same tier as Arteta I’d argue. He’s pretty much been carried by managing a decently big team. But what has he achieved really?
Have the rest of them combined won as many trophies as Emery?
Fair take to put Arteta in the B tier as an Arsenal Fan. IMO only a premier league title separates him from them.
That and Arteta not having more than one good finish in the premier league. He’s got miles to go before being considered in the Pep klopp tier.
What has Arteta achieved that the others in that list haven’t? Finishing second once in a league where United, Liverpool, Chelsea and Tottenham all had a terrible year?
I mean tangibly, it’s just the FA Cup. Intangibly he’s transformed Arsenal into a real title contender against THIS city team. Only Klopp has managed to do that in the last 5 or so seasons.
I put a tenner on Villa to finish in the top 2 this season, they had a great finish to previous season and odds at 100/1 were pretty generous. I don’t expect anything to come of it but cash out could be nice if they can maintain some of this form up until Christmas.
I think he’s achieving great things at Villa and the team is a genuine threat at the moment; they have a good core set of players.
Your cash out at Christmas will be less than a tenner
