Good luck finding enough Astatine to lick. It’s the rarest naturally-occurring element on earth. It’s estimated there is less than 30 grams in earth’s crust at any given time.

The particular form the element is in also matters a lot.

Take helium, for example. Is it really possible to ‘lick’ a gas? I’d say it’s not. You could lick liquid helium, though … and you really shouldn’t, unless you enjoy severe frostbite on your tongue.

What? No. The Leidenfrost effect would apply. You could pour a few milliliters of liquid helium over your tongue and it would boil on contact. You just need to make sure to minimize total contact time.

Many can’t be “kept” on the time scale of licking. And for some, the confirmed number of atoms ever existing is too low for any sensation or measurable radiation exposure during their violent but tiny decay. But if the particle accelerator beam, the only place they ever existed, crossed your head… we unfortunately know what happens https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anatoli_Bugorski#Accident

If it’s got a nice oxide layer on the outside, fine. Otherwise it’s fairly reactive.

The oxide layer forms within seconds, like aluminium and sodium (the two elements surrounding it), and even if you scraped it off and stuck it on your tongue, it isn’t going to react quickly enough to do you any damage. It will probably taste slightly bitter, like licking baking soda. I have some downstairs. Shall I test it and take a video of the results?

Having to sign in is annoying. Having the absolute LIE that it has anything to do with protecting the community is infuriating.

Technically, Piped is not just a frontend… How about setting up a redirect? I used to provide links to piped.video like the annoying bot but then I realized it’s decentralized and everyone using Piped probably has a redirect (or link-handling app) set up to their preferred instance.

BTW, there’s an Internet Archive mirror of the video available as a plain file or in their online player The reference is at 9:57 but the whole thing is worth it.

The Technical Difficulties team still does stuff together but I think the contestants realized the articles from later, better seasons all come from the Unusual Articles list, spoiling the surprise and ending Citation Needed. Also, Matt has since come out as transgender and accepts any pronouns but doesn’t want to talk more about it: no wonder since (s)he’s British.

The long-lived isotopes of uranium are about as dangerous as lead, actually: heavy metal poisoning is the overwhelming concern. Same as bismuth, which is effectively stable and incorrectly marked “Probably fine”.

Oganesson has a half-life of about 0.7 ms and is excruciatingly difficult to synthesize in a way that even lasts on the order of milliseconds. The beam it’s created in is sent to a semiconductor detector. You’d be stretching the definition of “lick” very heavily if you could even convolute a way to make it land on the human tongue.

Easy, just send the beam to their tongue instead of the duperwhatsit detector. Bam. Licked.
