Okay, as someone who’s never set foot in New York City, is it really that difficult for them to elect a mayor who’s not a giant hunk of fuck?

A combination of factors made it happen. First up, you had low turnout. Only 20.5% of voters actually voted in that election, the lowest of the past 30 years.

Aside from that, Adams had strong support amongst voters of color. For people who don’t live and/or work in these communities, it can seem like voting against their interests and be surprising, but non-white voters are not a monolithic block. Quite often, majority black or Hispanic neighborhoods in the Bronx can prove more conservative than many people might expect, for example, particularly on social issues. A lot of my older co-workers from Latin America at the time, along with my mother-in-law, didn’t view BLM protests as legitimate actions to begin with, and just thought of them as troublemakers looking to break stuff and loot. The “tough on crime to raise quality of life” message was really powerful for many of the people I know, and they took it completely uncritically. There’s also a ton of super religious folks that won’t support Democrats over things like LGBTQ+ rights, abortion, and other culture war GOP talking points. I can’t really speak to the Black community, but if you learn Spanish, there’s also just a ton of casual racism, sexism and homophobia that would probably shock people.

In addition to conservative social inclinations, lots of these folks are not what you would describe as well-informed. My elderly Ecuadorian, Dominican and Peruvian co-workers at that time were constantly buying into totally baseless conspiracies they got sent on WhatsApp. That and the 2020 presidential election cycle was super frustrating at home, as my mother-in-law would religiously watch the news on Univision, where they would trot out “scandals” and conspiracies that had been disproven weeks earlier and abandoned in the English-media, but Univision knew they could get away with airing for the significant portion of their audience with limited or no English. I even remember watching the news with her, my wife and her sister, who are both fluent in English, and the three of us getting upset that an interview in which we could hear the original English statements were being translated entirely inaccurately.

      Dinkins was pretty cool.

But look, it’s a megalopolis of people working hard, tired af at the end of every day.

Want political office? You gotta have real money, real connections, and the time and energy to get that power.

Unfortunately that magically counts out the majority of us.

No one in NYC likes him other than landlords. Republicans hate him because he’s black. Leftists hate him because he’s a landlord cop who doesn’t give a shit about anyone but himself.

Good riddance, the next in line is an actual leftist if he steps down

I guess that means he won’t step down. :(

I couldn’t possibly imagine they’d be “allowed” to take over any actual control if they are a leftist and aren’t beholden to the ownership class. We don’t get to have nice things in government.

Turns out you can’t just do everything you want with 45% to barely 50% of the seats. Especially when you’re the big tent party of everyone sane.

You think West Virginia was ever going to vote against coal? They did more than I would have expected.

The FBI seized Adams’ electronic devices as part of an investigation into whether his 2021 mayoral campaign’s fundraising.

      Expert editing.

That’s one of the primary functions of the editor. Depending on the outfit though, editorial oversight may not be required or even a thing really. Publishing approval may be from the writer directly, which also likely means no one else read over it after it was completed to find easily avoidable issues from rephrasing and reorganizing sentences.

We will see in the morning, but everyone in New York is already saying this was a Biden hit job. Its not even a whisper, every group chat is screaming that Joe Biden is doing this in retaliation for Eric Adams standing up against the Biden migrants, it is still very early but this only seems to hurt Harris support and fuel the Adams haters (which lets be honest they are never happy, ie Tiffany Caban says defund police while people get robbed at gunpoint eating in front of her office)

Hey I am reserving judgement til paperwork comes out. That does not change the sentiment amongst city employees that this was a hit job, and even the final papers may not answer that. But it does remind me of the Stasi considering everything that has occurred.

Are you? You’ve already jumped to spreading an outlandish theory that has no evidence behind it. That’s not what I would consider reserving judgment.

Will you disavow this theory if no evidence subsequently emerges?

I want to see what is being alleged. If this turns out to be the equivalent of parking tickets taken to a federal level it should be easy to draw conclusions. The Mayor has so far disavowed any criminal conduct, and even the acab crowd grilling him can’t guesstimate what the charges are. Regardless lets not act like all these DoJ buzz didn’t start after Adams called out Biden, since then a multitud of invasive investigations and house raids searching for? Every other person irl has mentioned House of Cards, Lemmy downvotes me for reporting it.

Jeez, you have an ax to grind. There is rumor that he accepted campaign money and travel from the country of Turkey, which is really really bizarre. That ain’t “parking tickets”.

Both NYC Democrats and Republicans are calling him an absent leader who needs to resign.15 people in his administration are under investigation by the FBI. Multiple people in his administration are or have resigned. 9 and counting NYC councilpeople and NY assemblypeople have asked for him to resign because he isn’t an effective leader of the city and region. State senators have requested that he resign. Even if he wants to stay, with such a quorum, he is effectively politically impotent.

But yeah, let’s wait until federal officials announce the charges today. He should still resign.

This set of comments have already aged like milk.

Mayor Eric Adams of New York City has been indicted on federal charges of bribery conspiracy, fraud and soliciting illegal foreign campaign donations. Illegal campaign donations funnelled through shell orgs as well as gifts, flights, hotels, etc etc. He attempted to hide the gifts, flights, hotels, etc with nominal purchases. The only person who had it out for Adams was Adams.

Corruption charges are a big deal. You can speculate all you want about the reason they are being brought but it just sounds like the ramblings of a conspiracy theorist honestly.

Ps I have no idea what you’re talking about regarding Biden. Somehow though you think this is retribution, as though that would be the reason for the charges and not someone dropping tips that the mayor is doing illegal things… 🙄

In the interest of open discussion I have gone over the indictment. My take aways are that the Mayor engaged in conduct not disimilar from similarly situated individuals, and that this disparate treatment of leveling criminal charges to me personally I believe earnestly are politically motivated. I know it is unpopular on lemmy, but this is my sentiment from South Brooklyn, NY (I feel many views are not from metro NY)
